Abstract

[Also in Division B7] In a railway vehicle brake apparatus of the kind adapted to be mounted on a two axle freight wagon bogie and comprising two brake beams 7 and 8 each adapted to be actuated by means of a brake cylinder 11 with a piston and linkage 12, 13, 14 for moving the brake beams to bring blake blocks 9 into and out of contact with the wheels 3 and 4 on the adjacent axle, the brake beams 7 and 8 are movably guided in lugs 10 on the bogie frame comprising a bolster 6 supported on side frame parts 5 by means of springs so that the bolster moves up and down relative to the bogie frame as the load of the wagon is decreased or increased, each of the pistons being pivotally connected to a lever 13 which is pivotally attached at 14 to the brake beam, the lever 13 extending approximately parallel to the brake beam and being arranged to contact a fulcrum bar 15 mounted rigidly on the bolster 6 and inclined so that the point of contact between the fulcrum bar and the lever is continuously displaced along the lever as the bolster moves up and down relative to the bogie frame in dependence upon the load on the wagon. As seen in Fig. 2, the fulcrum bars 15 are interconnected by a connecting piece which extends underneath the bolster. Owing to the leverage determined by the ratio between the length of the lever 13 and the distance between the bracket 14 and contact point between the lever 13 and the fulcrum bar 15 the braking force is varied as the bolster 6 moves up and down relative to the bogie frame in dependence upon the load of the wagon.
