A vending machine for dispensing articles, such as newspapers and magazines, one at a time towards a discharge passage 13, Figs. 1 and 10, comprises a pusher 40, Fig. 3, which urges a stack of articles N against retaining means 60, means 85 operated as by a handle 11 for elevating the leading article to clear the retaining means for release and a guide 63 which is urged as by a spring 66 against the stack of articles and serves to prevent the released article from striking the retaining means. The pusher 40 is arranged to constantly push the stack along horizontal supporting bars 35 towards the retaining means 60 by a spring 57 which is secured at one end to a selected position in a bracket 58 and at the other to a rod which is bent into lengths 51, 52, 55, pivots in a bearing 53 and engages a slot 43a of a pusher plate 41. Upon insertion of coinage into a slot 8, the handle 11 is freed for rotating, through bevel gears 73, 76, a shaft 75 which carries at each end a plate 77 and a pivotable arm 77 for carrying the means, which is in the form of a bar 85, for elevating the leading article; depression of the handle causes the bar to move clear of both the retaining means 60 and the guide 63, from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 10. The bar is provided with adjustablymounted pins 105 and rubber lips 104, the lowermost lip being of such length that it serves to free the pin from the article upon reaching the position shown in Fig. 10 whereupon the article can then slide down under its own weight on to a platform 29 in the discharge passage 13; a recess 30 in the front panel 3 allows the customer to grasp the article. The bar is pressed against the leading article by a spring tape and reel 90, 91 provided at each end and a guide 150 is also provided for deflecting the bar towards the article upon the event of sudden operation of the handle. Fig. 21 shows an alternative form of bar 160, folded metal or plastic strips 169 being provided instead of rubber lips; upon the machine being operated when empty, the pins are arranged to enter corresponding holes in the pusher plate 41 and be locked therein by the folded strips. The front panel 3 can be lifted clear of the machine when a door 6 is opened thereby allowing the framework which carries the dispensing mechanism to slide into and out of the housing 2 and be secured therein by a single bolt 127.
