Abstract
The invention comprises 3,5-di-isopropylphenyl N-methyl-carbamate and its preparation by (a) reacting 3,5-di-isopropylphenol or a salt thereof with phosgene to give 3,5-di-isopropylphenyl chloroformate, and reacting this with methylamine, (b) reaction of phosgene and methylamine to form N-methylcarbamyl chloride or methyl isocyanate, and reaction of the produce with 3,5-di-isopropylphenol, or (c) direct reaction of 3,5-di-isopropylphenol with phosgene and methylamine. The compound of the invention has insecticidal activity (see Division A5). 3,5-Di-isopropylphenol is prepared by reacting benzene and propylene in the presence of aluminium chloride to give 1,3,5-tri-isopropylbenzene, atmospheric oxidation of this compound to produce a hydroperoxide group on the secondary carbon atom of one of the isopropyl groups, and catalytic splitting of this compound into the desired phenol and acetone.ALSO:An insecticidal composition comprises 3, 5-diisopropylphenyl N-methyl-carbamate (see Division C2) and at least one of a solvent, a surface-active agent, a solid carrier, a propellant and a synegist, with or without the addition of another insecticide. Other insecticides specified are DDT, DDD, Malathion, Ronnel and Phosdrin (all Registered Trade Marks), methoxychlor, isobornyl thiocyanoacetate, lauryl thiocyanate, lethanes, pyrethrins, 0, 0-dimethyl 2, 2-dichlorovinyl phosphate, lindane, toxaphane, 1, 1-bis-(p-chlorophenyl)-2, 2, 2-trichloroethanol, p-chlorophenyl 2, 4, 5-trichlorophenyl sulphone, aryl alkyl sulphites, ethion, dimethoate, phorate, demeton, phosphamidon, quinoxaline trithiocarbonates, zineb, sulphur, bis-(pentachlorocyclopentadienyl), and a hexachlorocyclopentadrenechlorosulphonic acid reaction product. Surfactants specified are surbit (on aryl-alkyl sulphonate), marasperse (a bignosulphonate), and Emcol (Registered Trade Mark). Propellants specified are the Freons (Registered Trade Mark). Synergists specified are piperonyl butoxide, 2-(3, 4-methylenedioxyphenoxy)-3, 6, 9-trioxaundecane, isosafrole n-octyl sulphoxide, n-propyl isome, sesamine oil extracts, and octachlorodipropyl ether.
