Abstract

Heat hardenable adhesives comprise 8 to 25 weight per cent of polymerized vinyl chloride resin, 15 to 30 weight per cent of a liquid plasticizer, 1 to 6 weight per cent of a halogenated rubber and 40 to 70 weight per cent of a basic bonding agent consisting of a metal carbonate and a finly-divided reinforcing filler material which is chemically inert to the components of the adhesive, the proportion of filler being not more than 50 weight per cent of said bonding agent. Preferred resins are polyvinyl chloride and copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride. Many plasticizers are specified, including esters and polyesters, polyphenyl derivatives, phosphate esters, chlorinated and epoxidized oils and oil fatty acids and chlorinated paraffin wax. Specified halogenated rubbers are polychloroprene, halogenated butadiene/vinyl hydrocarbon copolymers and halogenated butyl rubber. Preferred carbonates are alkali metal and alkaline earth metal carbonates. Specified fillers are carbon black, barytes, silica, calcium silicate, titania, zinc chromate, iron oxide, calcium sulphate, sawdust, asbestos, diatomaceous earth, attapulgus clay, cork, mica, perlite and vermiculite. The compositions may also comprise an organic metallic stabilizer for the resin containing cadmium, tin, zinc, strontium, calcium, barium or lead; phenyl b -naphthylamine; a thermosetting phenolic resin and a metal oxide vulcanising agent, e.g. calcium, magnesium, zinc or lead oxide. The compositions may be used for joining metals and ceramics, e.g. in the manufacture of automobiles, dryers, washers and refrigerators. Examples describe compositions comprising polyvinyl chloride with and without a vinyl chloride/vinylidene chloride copolymer, diisodecyl phthalate with either epoxidized soya bean oil or diisooctyl phthalate, with and without a phenol/formaldehyde resin and hexamethylene tetramine, polychloroprene, calcium carbonate, carbon black, phenyl-b -naphthylamine, calcium oxide and dibutyl tin mercaptide. Other metal carbonates specified are sodium, barium, zinc, strontium and mixtures of calcium and magnesium carbonates.
