Abstract

In a process for the manufacture of compost from organic refuse by decomposition in a container, different parts of a mass of organic refuse in a container are successively brought into contact with warm, moist air to effect aeration of said parts, the parts are then embedded in the mass of the refuse for decomposition therein under anaerobic conditions, and the cycle is repeated, so that parts of the refuse are submitted repetitively to decomposition under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, the time during which a part is being decomposed under anaerobic conditions being longer than it is in contact with the warm moist air. The warm, moist air may be an airstream mixture at 40-60 DEG C. The transfer of refuse may be effected in a horizontal rotating drum having at least one closable opening for filling and emptying the drum, inlet means independent of the rotation of the drum for admitting warm, moist air in the drum above the refuse therein, and an air outlet. In one embodiment (Figs. 1 and 2), organic refuse is carried by conveyer 10 to closable opening 11 on wooden drum 1. The drum is rotated by the engagement of driven chain 5 with teeth 4 on encircling steel rings 3. Air or air-steam from source 31 is admitted by pipe 15 into the free space above the refuse in the drum. The surface of the refuse 14 is inclined due to the drum's rotation. Air is exhausted through openings 16 in the other end of the drum. The openings are covered by swivelling spring-loaded flaps 17 which are arranged to open as successive openings 16 come opposite the free space in the drum. Longitudinal bars 22 aid movement of material inside the drum. The continual or intermittent replacement of the surface layer of material ensures that successive portions of the refuse are subjected to aerobic fermentation while the remainder undergoes anaerobic fermentation. The drum is emptied from closable openings 12 no to conveyer 13. In a further embodiment (Figs. 5 and 6) air is supplied by U-shaped pipe 24, the holes 25 in which are protected by shield 26. The air outlet comprises pipe 28 provided with holes 29. The material may be treated, before or after decomposition, with hot or superheated steam. After decomposition, the material is screened and is preferably subjected to further ripening in sacks or silos, either airtight or provided with an air supply. <PICT:1005078/C1/1>
