Abstract

Lubricating oil compositions comprise a major amount of lubricating oil, and alkaline earth metal salts of 1-40 wt. per cent of a mixture of C2- 4 fatty acid and C14- 30 fatty acid in a ratio of 5-50 mole equivalents proportions of C2- 4 acid to 1 of C14- 30 acid, and an alkaline earth metal salt of 0.2-10.0 wt. per cent of a phosphosulphurized polymer (M.W. 600-4000 Staudinger) of a C2- 6 monolefin, the proportions being based on the total composition. The oil may be a mineral oil or a synthetic oil, such as "Ucon" (Registered Trade Mark) oil, ester oil, polycarbonate oil, and polysilicone oil. The preferred C2- 4 acid is acetic and the preferred C14- 30 acids are tallow fatty acids, oleic, palmitoleic, gadoleic, erucic, arachidonic and myristoleic acids. Other additives which may be present include alkaline earth metal phosphates, nitrates, and chlorides, sodium nitrite, lanolin, wool grease stearine, phenyl-a -naphthylamine, unneutralized phosphosulphurized polyolefins, amino-alkyl phenols (e.g. the reaction product of nonyl phenol, ethylene diamine and formaldehyde), polyisobutylene succinic anhydride and polyamine derivatives thereof including amic acids and imides, and alkaline earth metal petroleum and synthetic alkyl aryl sulphonates. Although the final products are liquid, they may first be prepared as concentrates, and such concentrates are stated to be usable per se as greases.
