Abstract

1,004,540. Compression moulding ceramic articles. VERSON MANUFACTURING CO. Jan. 14, 1964 [Jan. 14, 1963], No. 1593/64. Heading B5A. Shaped articles of mouldable material, e.g. semi-dry clay, are compression moulded in a sequence of two or more moulding stages in each of which material supplied to a mould liner, having an internal shape of the external shape of the shaped article, is moulded by supporting the liner in a mould and inserting a die into the liner. In the apparatus shown, material from a container 22 is pumped to spouts 26 and 27 which deliver to pockets 21a and 21b respectively of a liner 21. The liner 21 is mounted for step-by-step movement between the supply station A and a station F where it is placed on a conveyer 30 for delivery to a curing station. Liners designated 21, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35 in Fig. 1 are carried by a transport system mounted beneath a platen 15 which is adapted for vertical reciprocation by an hydraulic cylinder 16 on a fixed head 14. When the platen 15 is lowered the liners nest into receptacles 80 defining mould cavities 81a and 81b, Fig. 4, at stations A to E. At stations B to E the material in the liners is subjected to vibration, compaction, intermediate moulding and moulding to the required shape in which the article has a uniform wall thickness. The liners are supported by hangers 54 and 54a, Fig. 2, which are held against the liners by springs 58 and as the liners are lowered the hangers engage pockets 84 on the receptacles 80 and slide down the sides thereof, dies 60 to 65 being lowered into the liners. In the lowered position the hangers are reciprocated to the left by an hydraulic cylinder 70, under the control of a timer 14o, to a position in which they engage the edges of the preceding liner when the platen 15 is raised. To assist in the removal of the dies from within the liners they are coated with a suitable lubricant and the dies 62 to 65 heated by electric heating elements. The liners may be of metal or plastics material. It is suggested that stations B and D may be eliminated. At station A the clay may alternatively be supplied in the form of pugs.
