Abstract

1,003,895. Printing apparatus. WOOD NEWSPAPER MACHINERY CORPORATION. July 5, 1963 [Nov. 30, 1962], No. 26780/63. Heading B6C. Inking apparatus.-In a multi-page rotary printing press having a fountain roller 2, Fig. 2, and ink retaining compartments A, B (Fig. 1a, not shown), C, D, Fig. 1b, positioned at each page-width of the roller the colour conversion apparatus positioned selectively adjacent one of the said page-widths comprises a colour ink hopper 21 mounted detachably on the press, conduit 23 for transferring ink from said hopper to said selected page-width compartment, a collector tray 25 for receiving colour ink overflow from said compartment and an impeller pump 26 for transferring ink from said tray to said hopper. In the press each ink retaining compartment A . . . D is defined by the fountain roller 2, scraper blade assembly section 13 including scraper blade 14 and dividers 12 positioned at the ends of the scraper blade assembly sections 13. Black ink is supplied to the page-width compartments through a common main manifold conduit 19 and individual compartment swivel spigots 20 and the ink overflowing from assembly sections B drains down to a fountain collector trough 16 past a strainer 43 and thence to a drain pipe 17 (Fig. 1a, not shown) where it is forced by pump means (not shown) through a feed pipe 18 into said conduit 19. The ink supply is regulated or shut off by a valve 20a in the swivel spigot 20. For colour conversion any black ink remaining in the ink compartment is dumped by releasing lock tension devices 15 and withdrawing scraper blade section 14 from its ink-sealed contact with fountain roller 2. After the compartment has been cleaned and tension devices re-set the conversion unit is placed on the press by securing the hopper 21 to the fountain blade mechanism 9 by screw knobs 22 and resting the colour collector tray 25 on the fountain trough 16. Colour ink is poured into the hopper 21, the level of the ink being visible through the blister 35 and a control valve 24 opened to permit the ink to flow under gravity from the hopper through conduit 23 into the compartment, where an ink pocket 39 is formed. The fountain roller 2 then picks up a coat of ink as it rotates clockwise and the thickness and uniformity of this ink coat is controlled by the setting of a fountain blade 40, flexed by an action of fulcrum 42 through control mechanism 41. Mounted in and integral with the hopper 21 is an eccentric impeller pump 26, having its intake connected to tray 25 through intake pipe 27 and its outlet discharging through an opening 28. Impeller pump 26 is driven through drive gear 30 and pinion gear 31 mounted on pump shaft 32, driven in turn by motor-gear reducer 33 (Fig. 1a, not shown) which is operated independently of the main press motors. Each page-width compartment may be provided with its own detachable colour conversion unit. The press is provided with a mist guard 37, having a sliding panel 37a, for closing off the opening 36 when the colour conversion unit is removed from the press. Specification 999,320 is referred to.
