Abstract

A substrate is protected from attack by micro-organisms by applying thereto or incorporating therein a germicidally effective amount of a compound of the following formulae: <FORM:1003685/A5-A6/1> or <FORM:1003685/A5-A6/2> wherein Y and Z are halogen, aryl or aryl-A; wherein the aryl groups are substituted or unsubstituted aryl radicals; A is p sulphur or oxygen; and X and X1 are the same or different and are halogen atoms, nitrate, hydroxide, acetate or benzoate radicals or taken together are an oxygen atom or a carbonate or sulphate radical. Typical bismuth compounds are tripheryl bismuthine, triphenyl bismuth dichloride, phenyl, bis (phenylthio) bismuthine, tris (p-chlorophenyl) bismuthine, chlorodiphenylbismuthine, tri-(p-tolyl) bismuthine tris(p-bromophenyl) bismuthine tris-(p-fluoryphenyl) bismuthine, tris-(p-methoxyphenyl) bismuthine, p-hydroxyphenyl diphenylbismuthine, 1-naphthyldiphenyl bismuthine, triphenylbismuthdibromide, triphenyl bismuth difluoride and iodo bis (p-chlorophenyl) bismuthine. The bismuth compounds may be applied in the form of solutions, aqueous emulsions or dispersions and liquid, bar or powder detergent formulations or aerosols. Such formulations may contain non-ionic, cationic or anionic surface active agents. The bismuth compounds may be used to treat textiles, paper wood, rubber, plastics, animal skins, leather and glass. In treating textiles compositions containing sodium hypochlorite cationic softers and crease proofing water-soluble melamine formaldehyde resins and other thermosetting resins and curing agents therefor may be employed.
