Abstract
A flexible bonding sheet material, adapted to be sealed to a sheet of packaging material by superimposing the bonding material and the packaging material and applying heat and pressure thereto, comprises a flexible web material provided on at least one surface with a coating constituted by a composition including 15-70% by weight of a petroleum wax having a melting point between 130 DEG F. and 170 DEG F. and 15-70% by weight of a copolymer formed by the copolymerization of 2-4 parts by weight of ethylene and 1 part by weight of vinyl acetate, and having a melt index between 5 and 500. The web material may be a paper sheet, the composition being applied thereto in an amount of 8-20 lb. per ream, paperboard, regenerated cellulose or a laminate of paper and metal foil. The packaging material may be polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polystyrene, cellulose acetate, rubber hydrochloride, nitrocellulose- or polyvinylidene chloride-coated regenerated cellulose films, or waxed paper. The composition may contain 10-30% by weight of a modifying resin compatible with the wax, e.g. terpene resins, hydrogenated rosin and esters thereof, coumarone-indene resins, polymerized rosin and esters thereof and/or cyclicized rubber. The composition may also contain oxidized polyethylene which may have a molecular weight of 1200-1400 and an acid number of 12-25. The petroleum wax may be microcrystalline, semimicrocrystalline or paraffin wax, or mixtures thereof. The composition may be applied as a thin even coating, or as a series of small discrete mounds by means of an engraved or knurled applicator roll.
