Abstract

1,001,973. Positive clutches. S. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd. Oct. 29, 1962 [Oct. 27, 1961], No. 38480/61. Heading FC2. In a synchronized dog-clutch, for a motorvehicle automatic transmission, comprising circumferentially toothed driving and driven members 1, 3, and an internally toothed axially slidable clutch ring 8 connected through balk pins 7 to a disc 6 loaded by Belleville springs 26 against a circlip 35 on an operating sleeve 5, a synchronizing friction cone 11 is both axially and rotationally engaged solely by the balk pins 7 through the balk engaging surfaces which are of a radiused chamfer form 15 so that the axial engaging load applied to the synchronizing cone 11 is controlled by the relative axial position and inclination of the balking surfaces such that during clutch engagement, which is effected when the sleeve 5 is moved to the left by a rod-fork 23, 22 actuated by electrically irreversibly driven cams 29, the reaction and relative axial position between the cone 11 and balk pins 7 are equalized between the variably inclined balk surfaces 15 and the Belleville springs 26. Initial engagement of the cone 11 is effected through a spring ring 18 mounted thereon, engaged by a radially inner surface 9 of the balk pins, the balk surfaces 15 of which are relieved in this region and the pins reduced in diameter at 16 to permit both axial, and later, rotational movement of the clutch ring 8 relative to the cone 11 for final dog-clutch engagement. In Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), final engagement of the dog-clutch is further assisted by the balk pins which are wider to permit greater relative rotary movement between the ring 8 and cone 11, and the balk surfaces are chamfered to match straight chamfers on the engaging dog-teeth. Specification 996,377 is referred to.
