Abstract

In a transmission system in which data transmitted in blocks is corrected by repetition each received block is returned to the transmitter where it is compared with the block transmitted, and, further, each block is followed by a signal indicating the result of the comparison, this signal also being returned and compared, and if found to be faulty repeated. Parallel data from a tape reader is converted to serial form and transmitted as a block which is also stored. When the store is full the tape reader is stopped. The received block is stored and returned to the transmitter where it is compared with the stored block. If there is no error a signal to that effect is transmitted causing the receiver store to read out to a tape perforator. The no error signal, being returned to the transmitter, is compared with the stored no error signal and if correct the transmitter store is erased and the next block transmitted, but if incorrect the no error signal is repeated. If the block comparison indicates error an error signal is sent, causing the receiver store to be erased. The error signal is also compared with itself at the transmitter and, if faulty, is repeated or, if correct, initiates repetition from the store. To decrease error probability the signals on the return channel may be converted such that characters containing an odd number of mark bits are inverted.
