Abstract

1,000,465. Ultrasonic inclination meter. OYO. CHISHITSU CO. Ltd. Aug. 7, 1963 [Aug. 7, 1962], No. 31176/63. Heading H4D. An inclination meter comprises a liquid filled casing 8 (Fig. 2) housing a member 2 (Figs. 1 and 2) supported at one end for free movement in one plane (in this case, the plane of the drawing) and the other end of which carries an electro-mechanical wave transducer 4 the distance of which from a reflecting surface 3 is determined from the time interval between the emission of a pulse A (Fig. 3) by transducer 4 and the reception of such pulse B (Fig. 3) by the transducer after reflection at surface 3. The latter is formed as an involute curve so that the distance 1 between it and the transducer is linearly related to the angle of inclination #. Thus, knowing the velocity v of the waves in the liquid, K#=vt/2 where t is the "go" and " return " time of the pulses and K is a constant. By coupling together, by means of socket connections 6, 7, two similar instruments the members 2 of which are free to swing in planes at right angles to one another the absolute angle of inclination may be determined. The instrument may be employed in boreholes or in normally inaccessible positions such as the upper part of high buildings.
