Abstract

1,000,419. Friction clutches. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. Dec. 4, 1961, No. 43356/61. Heading F2C. A spring-released speed and temperatureresponsive friction clutch between a freely mounted motor-vehicle engine cooling fan 14 and a driving member 10, bolted to a fan belt pulley 30 fast on a water pump shaft 26, is engaged by the thermal expansion of an expansible material in a cylinder 82 mounted on a freely mounted fan-spider assembly 26, such expansion acting through a piston 80 to turn a radial lever 65 having an axial end tab 72 which expands the free leading end of a clutch band 16 into engagement with a driving drum 34 on the driving member 10. A mass 63, secured to the band leading end assists engagement centrifugally, and a spring 86 acts on the lever 65 to release the clutch with a snap action at a lower temperature than that of engagement. The trailing end 61 of the clutch band 16 is anchored in a radial slot 60 of the driven spider 46 which together with the fan 14 and plate 66 are mounted on bearings 52 on a stub shaft 54 fast in the outer end of the driving member 10.
