Abstract

1,000,393. Determining relative quantities of fluid mixture constituents. CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE Ltd. Oct. 26, 1962 [Oct.27, 1961], No. 40639/62. Heading G1N. In a method and apparatus for the continuous electrochemical measurement of the concentration of a substance, such as sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere, the gas introduced through pipe 4, is brought at a constant speed into contact with a flowing solution 7 reactive with the substance to be measured, and the solution is electrolysed by at least two electrodes 2, 3 one (2) of which may become polarised and in the vicinity of which intensive bubbling is employed to ensure that practically all the electro-chemically active substance produced in the solution by the reaction with the substance in the gas is oxidised or reduced, the current during electrolysis being measured to provide an indication of the concentration. Air passed in tube 4 at a speed of 0. 5-1 litres per minute mixes with a 10% acqueous solution of sulphuric acid saturated with iodine passing along tube 5 at a speed of . 05-1 mL per minute from a vessel 10 filled with iodine crystals and the reaction produces iodide ions which are anodically oxidised at a platinum electrode 2. An equivalent amount of bichromate ions are reduced at an electrode 3 which extends into a depolarising agent comprising crystals of Potassium bichromate. The method is said to be suitable for the determination of the concentration of Chlorine, ozone or oxygen.
