Abstract
Synthetic resins are obtained by polymerizing a mixture containing (a) a diallylidene acetal ester of (1) a dicarboxylic acid which contains no acetylenic bond and (2) an allylidene acetal of an alcohol having at least three hydroxyl groups, the acetal having at least one free alcoholic hydroxyl group, or a mixture of the diallylidene acetal ester and diallylidene pentaerythritol, and (b) an ester containing free alcoholic hydroxyl groups and derived from the reaction of an a ,b -olefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, or a functional derivative thereof, with a polyhydric alcohol. The mixture may include (c) an allyl, benzyl, or substituted allyl or benzyl, partial ether of a polyhydric alcohol, the partial ether containing at least one free hydroxyl and/or carboxylic acid group per molecule, and/or (d) allyl alcohol. The ester (b) may be derived from a mixture of an a ,b -unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and another polyfunctional carboxylic acid containing no acetylenic or olefinic bonds, e.g. a polycarboxylic acid, hydroxy carboxylic acid or chlorinated polycarboxylic acid. The esters (b) may be monomeric or oligomeric esters. The mixture may be polymerized with an acid catalyst at from 20 DEG to 120 DEG C. The polymerization may be terminated when a resin having a hydroxy value between 80 and 130 is obtained and the resinous intermediate product thus formed reacted with a halosilane. The resins of the invention are unsaturated and may be polymerized with unsaturated monomers; from 10 to 80% by weight of unsaturated monomer, based on the total weight, may be used. Unsaturated monomers mentioned include styrene, a -chlorostyrene, a -methyl styrene, vinyl toluene, N-vinyl pyrrolidone, vinyl and allyl esters, and acrylates and methacrylates. Acrolein diallylidene acetal may be included in the polymerization mixture; bases and polymerization inhibitors also may be added. Free radical catalysts are used for the polymerization, and polymerization accelerators may be added. In examples, an ester made from fumaric acid, maleic anhydride, ethylene glycol and propanediol-1,2, is mixed with pentaerythritol triallyl ether and reacted with bis-(2-vinyl-1,3-dioxolane - 4 - butyl) - terephthalate, -orthophthalate, -maleate and -itaconate, in the presence of boron trifluoride tetrahydrofuran complex; the resins obtained are mixed with styrene, sodium hydroxide and hydroquinone stabilizer, and the mixtures are polymerized with methylethylketone peroxide catalyst and cobalt naphthenate accelerator. The resins may be mixed with a silicone oil, a condensation resin of formaldehyde with urea, melamine or benzoguanamine, or a filler, e.g. asbestos, titanium dioxide, ferric oxide, calcium carbonate, kaolin, powdered quartz, ground glass or silicon carbide.
