Abstract

Polymers, e.g. polyethylene or polystyrene, are fractionated by passing a solution of the polymer, e.g. in benzene, through a body of dimensionally stable, porous particulate silica gel in which the gel liquid is the same as the polymer solvent. The silica gel may have an average diameter of 100-250 microns and may be organo- or aero-gels or gels formed by mixing pyrogenically produced silica with benzene.
