Abstract
100,006. British Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co., (Assignees of Wilson, C. E.). Jan. 5, 1915. Drawings to Specification. Motors, gearing for.-In electric starting-devices for the engines of automobiles in which the armature moves axially to connect it with the flywheel, the axial movement is effected by varying the magnetization of the field from the arrangement which exists during the turning movement. In a four-pole machine, each pole having a winding, only two opposite poles are magnetized at first and of opposite polarity; endlong movement is therefore obtained without rotation if the magnetization is equal. It may be slightly unbalanced so as to obtain slow rotation. In a four-pole machine, only two of which are wound, the current through one is reversed at starting so as to alter its polarity. In another modification having four wound poles, the first exciting-current is directed so as to make two adjacent poles of one polarity and the other two of opposite polarity, obtaining thereby a two-pole field. The windings are connected at first in series and then in pairs in parallel. In a modification of the last arrangement, the axial movement is effected in two steps; first a resistance is put in circuit with only two of the windings, obtaining thereby slow rotation of the armature, and then the resistance is cut out, the four windings then being in series to effect the endlong movement. In all these arrangements the switch for controlling the connexion is constrained to move in one direction only by a ratchet and detent. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also an arrangement in which the motor has a simple series winding and a pinion is mounted on the armature shaft, the pinion and shaft being correspondingly screw-threaded. The pinion can have axial movement on the shaft, this movement being cushioned by a spring. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
