Abstract

An overheat protection system when used with a thermal store 2 comprises a heat exchange unit 8 in thermal connection with the thermal store 2. Cold water is communicated through the heat exchange unit 8 via a thermostatic valve 10, and the valve 10 detennines when the temperature of the thermal store 2 exceeds a predetermined temperature so that water from the heat exchange unit 8 is discharged to drain via a pipe 12 and cools the thermal store 2 and prevents overheating of thermal store 2. The heat exchange unit 8 may be a copper or stainless steel coil located in the thermal store 2 through a suitable sized port in the thermal store 2. Cold water may be from a header tank or direct fed mains water 9. The valve 10 may be mains electrically or battery powered or may be a passive mechanical valve not requiring power at all. Additional ports in the thermal store 2 may be provided for an immersion heater. The thermal store 2 may be a tank of water connected to a heat source 1 such as a wood burning stove or solar collector via pipes 3, 4.
