Abstract
A downhole telemetry system for transmitting electromagnetic signals wirelessly in a bore hole comprises a surface modem (230) coupled to an antenna and a downhole modem (220) coupled to an antenna (201). The modems (220, 230) communicate using discrete multitone (DMT) modulation over a first set of frequency subchannels for uplink communications to a surface computer (234) where the telemetry data may be processed. Bidirectional communication may be implemented, whereby downlink communications are effected over a second set of frequency subchannels. The number of bits transmitted over a frequency subchannel is determined in a configuration process and may be determined dynamically so as to optimise the communications for the downhole conditions, improving telemetry data rate and reliability.
