Abstract

An inertia reel comprises an omni-directional acceleration sensor having a trip mechanism which converts movement of a part of a holding mechanism into rotational movement of an output of the sensor. The holding mechanism comprises an inertia weight (30, fig 6) which under vehicle acceleration above a predetermined level causes at least one of a pair of lever arms 28 to move so that tongues (29) engages tabs 41 thereby rotating trip plate 40. Trip plate 40 has a ramped side wall 42 which, when the trip plate 40 is rotated, forces bifurcated trigger finger 47 to pivot thereby allowing pawl 45 to engage a ratchet wheel (12) that locks a spool preventing a webbing strap from being paid out. The lever arms 28 have conical cup portions in which a ball shaped inertia weight sits. In other embodiments the weight may be non-spherical having an equatorial bulge or a ball with a pair of opposed substantially conical protrusions. A separate strap acceleration sensor may be provided, this acceleration sensor brakes the spool when the strap undergoes acceleration above a predetermined threshold.
