Abstract

Fig. 1 illustrates a control circuit (10) connected between an electrical supply (12) and a load (14), such as a DC supply (12) and a DC motor (14). The circuit (10) has four arms (16) forming a bridge. Control devices (22) are provided in each arm (16) to allow the current to the motor (14) to be controlled. For example, the polarity of the current can be reversed. This is controlled by a controller (24) which sets the conducting state of the devices (22). The controller is also able to undertake a test sequence by switching individual control devices between a conducting and non-conducting state, while taking an electrical measurement from the point (30), such as by a potential divider. In the event that all of the devices (22) are functioning correctly, the sequence of switching will yield a sequence of results which indicates correct operation of all of the devices (22).
