Abstract
An automated optical inspection (AOI) system is used to determine the position of a surface mount technology (SMT) component on a circuit board. Colour images, e.g. RGB, are captured of the component on the circuit board and an image processor analyses regions of interest (ROI), namely an ROI which is expected to include only pixels of the board, and an ROI which is expected to include only pixels of the component. The system performs training on pixels representing the component and the board, and uses this training to detect an edge of the component. This may be done by providing a 3D histogram for the component colour and a separate 3D histogram for the board colour. The edge detection can be used to check the correct positioning of components on the board even when there is low contrast between the component and the board.
