Abstract

A method of operating a mobile wireless service, e.g. a Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS), comprises causing a network controller to broadcast an offer of service to all mobile stations within a cell. The network controller requests an indication of interest in the offered service from each mobile station and receives data from each interested mobile station to enable the position or received signal quality of each mobile station to be determined. The network controller analyses the arrangement of interested mobile stations in one or more predefined areas A and requires that each interested mobile station outside of the range of a subsequent broadcast transmission, e.g. in regions B and C, use an alternative mechanism to receive the service, e.g. a point-to-point connection. Thus, the service may be broadcast at reduced power to the interested mobiles within range.
