Abstract

Transfer of a data file (2) from a service provider (1) to a mobile communications device (5) comprises the steps of splitting the file into first and second parts (A and B), transmitting the first and second file parts over respective first and second communications routes (3 qnd 4) from the service provider to the mobile communications device, and reassembling the file from the first and second file parts at the mobile communications device. The first communications route may be a lower cost route and transfer the bulk of the data, such as an internet and then short range transmission such as Bluetooth or a universal serial bus. The algorithm that splits the file may be encrypted, so that the file parts cannot be used until it is reassembled.
