Abstract
A thermal engine for a thermocycler, the thermal engine comprising an electrically-controlled heating and cooling element, a heatsink and a heating and cooling stage in thermal contact with the heating and cooling element, the heating and cooling stage having a surface releasably holding an interchangeable sample block having first and second surfaces, the first surface being arranged for receiving samples and the second surface being capable of releasable engagement with the heating and cooling stage of the thermal engine. A thermally conductive gasket is preferably interposed between the heating and cooling stage and the sample block.
