Abstract
Improvements in data communications networks for distributing content (particularly streaming media) from a server to a client, comprising: storing content data at the server for selective retrieval by the client; providing the client with data about the content; at the client, processing the data about the content to determine a subset of content data to be retrieved and sending a content data transfer instruction to the server for that subset to be transferred to the client; in response to the content data transfer instruction, commencing transmission of the requested subset of the content data from the server to the client; wherein: the content data transfer instruction identifies a specific set of bits within the content data such that the server need exercise no discretion in selecting the content data for transmission to the client in response to the instruction. The invention enables, for example, streaming media to be distributed using standard web servers with TCP/IP and HTTP.
