Abstract

Apparatus and method capable of adding an optical information signal at a particular transmission wavelength to a Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM) optical medium that already contains an optical information signal at the transmission wavelength is described. The addition of the optical information signal is achieved without any requirement to OEO (Optical/Electrical/Optical) convert the optical information signal already present within the WDM optical medium. The WDM optical medium may comprise an optical network wherein one or more optical nodes provide the means for adding the optical information signal. Such apparatus and described method provide an ideal way for developing flexible, scaleable and a cost effective communication networks.
