Abstract

A differential comprises a housing 10 and a differential carrier 24 supported in the by two taper roller bearings 34, 35 spaced lengthwise along an axis of the housing 10. An outer race 36 of the bearing 34 abuts an outer diameter of a Belleville spring 37 having an inner diameter that abuts a further Belleville spring 38 in a back-to-back relationship. The other bearing 35 has an outer race 40 which is engaged by ring 41 having an male screw thread engaged with female screw thread provided in the housing 10. When the ring 41 is tightened against the outer race 40 the differential carrier 24 is moved thereby deforming the Belleville springs 37, 38. When a correct position of the carrier 24 has been reached the ring 41 is locked and the deformation of the Belleville springs 27, 38 provide a pre-load to the bearings 34, 35 which is maintained even when the housing is subjected to forces when it is installed in a vehicle.
