Abstract

A hinge component for use in providing a rising butt hinge function between a fixed structure, such as a safety rail or barrier, and a movable structure, such as a gate or door. A hinge assembly 10, comprises a first hinge component 11, a support tube 12, which extends through and is rotatable and axially movable within the first component 11, and second hinge component 13, secured to the support tube 12. The first hinge component 11, comprises a first body portion in the form of a sleeve [14, Fig. 3] and a second body portion in the form of a socket formation [15, Fig. 4]. The sleeve [14] defines a bore [20, Fig. 2] of a cylindrical shape, and two location rings [18, 19, Fig. 2] are provided, axially spaced, within the bore [20]. The location rings [18, 19] act as bearing surfaces for location and sliding movement relative to the support tube 12. The socket [15] also contains axially spaced location rings [22, 23, Fig. 4]. The socket [15] is also formed with an annular boss formation [25, Fig. 4] at a position mid-way between the location rings [22, 23]. The boss formation surrounds a screw threaded aperture [26, Fig.4], and a grub screw provided in that aperture enables an end of an inserted elongate tube to be secured in the socket [15]. The second hinge component 13, comprises a tubular body [30, Fig.6] of a general construction substantially similar to that of the first body portion [14] of the first hinge component 11, and an oblique surface [32, Fig. 6] which acts in use as an abutment and bearing surface for sliding movement when said second component and tube 12, rotate and in consequence move axially relative to the first hinge component 11.
