Abstract

An electric apparatus for transmitting mechanical power comprises rotatable input and output electromagnetic elements 312, 311 respectively. The output electromagnetic element is supplied with power through a rotary commutator arrangement 320 comprising a rotary brush cage 322 having slip rings 362 on its outer surface and brushes 321, the rotation of the brush cage allowing the synchronisation of the rotating magnetic fields of the input and output elements. In an alternative embodiment the rotary commutation is simulated electronically. The current supplied may be AC or DC. The interaction of the input and output elements may transmit and convert electrical power as well as mechanical power.
