Abstract

A personal mobile radio is periodically turned on to check channel activity, and an access code such as may be present in a Continuous Tone Controlled Squelch System signal. If channel activity is detected and the access code is incorrect then the personal mobile radio is put into power saving mode for an extended time period (tmax). The extended period is shortened in each cycle until it reaches its minimum predefined value (tmin). The mobile apparatus (2, fig.3) comprises a transceiver/receiver module (20) equipped with an antenna (22), a battery (24), a data analysing module (26) and a power switch (28). The data analysing module (26) is connected to transceiver/receiver module (20) via a first signal connection (36), to the battery (24) via power connection (34), and to the power switch (28) via a second signal connection (38). The power switch (28) interconnects the battery (24) and the transceiver/receiver module (20) by means of power connections (30 and 32).
