Description
The present disclosure relates generally to compositions and methods for imparting color and/or tone to hair.
CONTEXTECONTEXT
It is known that consumers wish to use cosmetic and care compositions which improve the appearance of keratinous substrates such as the hair, for example by modifying the color, the style and/or the shape of the hair, and/or by imparting various properties to hair, such as shine and conditioning. Many of the compositions and processes known to improve the appearance of hair involve chemical treatment of the hair.
The process of changing hair color, for example, may involve depositing an artificial color on the hair which gives a different shade or color to the hair, and/or bleaching the hair, such as lightening the color dark hair to lighter shades. The hair bleaching process, also known as lightening, generally requires the use of compositions that include at least one oxidizing agent.
The lightening or bleaching of the hair is typically assessed by the variation in the pitch before and after the application of a hair color toning composition to the hair. This variation is the degree or level of lightening or fading. The notion of "tone" is based on the classification of natural shades, a tone separating each shade from the shade that immediately follows or precedes it, well known to hairdressing professionals. The heights or tonal levels range from 1 (black) to 10 (light blond), one unit corresponding to one tone; thus, the higher the number, the lighter the shade or the greater the degree of discoloration.
In general, hair lightening or bleaching compositions and hair dye compositions possess an alkalinity such that these compositions have a pH value above 7, typically at a pH of 9 and above, and generally require the presence an alkalizing agent such as ammonia or a compound which generates ammonia gas and/or an amine or ammonium-based compound in quantities sufficient to make these compositions alkaline. The alkalizing agent causes the hair shaft to swell, allowing small molecules of oxidative dye to enter the cuticle and cortex before the oxidation-condensation process is complete. The larger color complexes resulting from the oxidation reaction are then trapped inside the hair fiber, thus permanently modifying the color of the hair.
Thus, typically, after a hair bleaching process, consumers also deposit color into or onto the bleached hair in order to achieve a different hair color than the color of the hair before bleaching, or the color of the bleached hair. This process is conventionally called "colouring" or "tinting" the hair.
The most common hair dye processes are permanent dye and semi-permanent or temporary dye. Permanent hair dye compositions use oxidation dye precursors, which are also known as primary intermediates or couplers. These oxidation dye precursors are colorless or faintly colored compounds which, when combined with oxidants, give rise to colored complexes by a process of oxidative condensation. Permanent hair dye compositions also contain ammonia or other alkalizing agents which cause the hair shaft to swell, allowing small molecules of oxidation dye to penetrate the cuticle and cortex prior to end of the oxidative condensation process. The larger color complexes resulting from the oxidation reaction are then trapped inside the hair fiber, thus permanently modifying the color of the hair.
On the other hand, semi-permanent or temporary hair dye compositions typically use pigments, oil-soluble dyes or direct dyes selected from acidic (anionic), basic (cationic) or neutral direct dyes which are deposited on the fiber capillary to impart color to the hair. In some cases, such dye compositions can also be combined with an oxidizing composition.
Although the above processes are effective in changing hair color, most of these chemical treatments can damage the hair fibers, leading to a decrease in hair strength, as well as a negative effect on the sensory properties of the hair, such as smoothness, shine and feel. Thus, in order to reduce or avoid these disadvantages or to provide additional benefits for improving the sensory properties of the hair while modifying the color of the hair, it is necessary to use new and additional treatment components and compositions to be used before, during or after, or in addition to hair color modification processes.
However, the choice of these components or treatments could pose difficulties insofar as they cannot adversely affect other cosmetic attributes such as ease and uniformity of application, rheology or viscosity properties and stability. compositions, color deposition and target shade formation, and/or result in other disadvantages such as increased damage or less healthy looking hair. It would therefore be desirable to provide the consumer with compositions and methods for treating hair, such as bleaching hair and/or depositing color on hair effectively, while providing or maintaining other cosmetic and sensory benefits such as shine, conditioning, fiber strength and/or a healthy look to hair, but avoiding or minimizing hair damage.
