Description
The invention relates to the production of aromatics for petrochemicals (benzene, toluene, xylenes, ie, BTX). More particularly, the object of the invention is to be able to produce aromatics, and in particular paraxylene, by an oxycombustion process of oxygen-rich hydrocarbon compounds such as biomass.
An aromatic complex (or device for converting aromatic compounds) is a device powered by charges mainly composed of six to ten or more carbon atoms, denoted C6 to C10+ charges. Different sources of aromatic compounds can be introduced into an aromatic complex, the most common being from a catalytic naphtha reforming process. Mixtures of aromatic compounds obtained by conversion process of lignocellulosic biomass can also, after purification treatment, be introduced into an aromatic complex. For example, the oxycombustion process of lignocellulosic biomass can be considered as a source of aromatics.
Within an aromatic complex, whatever the source of aromatics, benzene and aromatic alkyls (e.g. toluene, paraxylene, orthoxylene) are extracted and then converted into the desired intermediates. The products of interest are aromatics with 0 (benzene), 1 (toluene) or 2 (xylenes) methyl groups, and in particular, within xylenes, paraxylene, having the highest market value.
Oxycombustion processes of oxygen-rich hydrocarbon compounds produce a mixture of CO, CO2 and water as well as energy that can be used to produce electricity, for example. This mixture of CO2, water and CO contains little or no nitrogen because an oxygen-enriched gas or even pure oxygen is used for combustion.
- l’isomérisation des composés aromatiques à 8 atomes de carbone notés composés A8 permettant de convertir l’orthoxylène, le métaxylène et l’éthylbenzène en paraxylène ;
To date, aromatic complexes make it possible to produce benzene, possibly toluene, and xylenes (often paraxylene, sometimes orthoxylene). An aromatic complex generally has at least one catalytic unit having at least one of the following functions:
- the isomerization of aromatic compounds with 8 carbon atoms, denoted A8 compounds, making it possible to convert orthoxylene, metaxylene and ethylbenzene into paraxylene;
- transalkylation to produce xylenes from a mixture of toluene (and optionally benzene) and A9+ compounds such as trimethylbenzenes and tetramethylbenzenes; And
- the disproportionation of toluene, which makes it possible to produce benzene and xylenes.
The aromatic loop makes it possible to produce high purity paraxylene by separation by adsorption or by crystallization, an operation well known in the prior art. This "C8-aromatic loop" includes a step for removing heavy compounds (i.e., C9+) in a distillation column called the "xylene column". The overhead from this column, which contains the C8-aromatic isomers (i.e., A8), is then sent to the paraxylene separation process which is very generally a simulated moving bed adsorption (LMS) separation process to producing an extract and a raffinate, or a crystallization process in which a fraction of paraxylene is isolated from the rest of the constituents of the mixture in the form of crystals.
The extract, which contains paraxylene, is then distilled to obtain high purity paraxylene. The raffinate, rich in metaxylene, orthoxylene and ethylbenzene, is treated in a catalytic isomerization unit which gives a mixture of C8 aromatics, in which the proportion of xylenes (ortho-, meta-, para-xylenes) is practically at thermodynamic equilibrium and the amount of ethylbenzene is reduced. This mixture is again sent to the “xylene column” with the fresh feed.
All industrial processes for the isomerization of C8-aromatics make it possible to isomerize xylenes. The transformation of ethylbenzene depends, on the other hand, on the type of process and catalyst chosen. Indeed, petrochemical complexes use an isomerization unit called "isomerizing" (i.e., isomerization of ethylbenzene into a mixture of C8 aromatics) or "dealkylating" (i.e., dealkylation of ethylbenzene into benzene), in order to favor the production (at the exit of the aromatic loop) respectively either of paraxylene alone, or of benzene and paraxylene.
The choice of an “isomerizing” isomerization makes it possible, as indicated above, to maximize the production of paraxylene, which is the compound with the highest added value at the output of the aromatic complex. The combination within an aromatic complex of an “isomerizing” isomerization and of an isomerization in the liquid phase as described for example in the patents US8697929, US7371913, US4962258, US6180550, US7915471, US10035739 and US10029958 makes it possible in particular to maximize the amount of paraxylene produced while having a reduced loss of aromatic rings compared to an aromatic complex according to the prior art.
Oxycombustion is a common process in the glass, cement and steel industries. It is also a promising technological approach for the capture of CO2 after combustion, as the latter can be easily separated from the produced water and does not contain nitrogen. The main difference with conventional combustion in the presence of air is that the fuel is burned in the presence of pure oxygen. Pure oxygen, O2, can be produced by an air separation unit that removes atmospheric N2 from the oxidant stream or by electrolysis of water. A flue gas with a high concentration of CO2 and water vapor is then produced at the oxycombustion outlet. Water vapor can be removed by condensation and a relatively high purity CO2 stream is obtained which, after further purification and dehydration, can be pumped to a geological storage site or used as a chemical reagent for further processing into products with high added value. Oxycombustion technologies are well known to those skilled in the art, one can for example refer to the following article: Fuel, volume 215, March 1, 2018, pages 778-786 for the technology implemented in bed fluidized.
: j6366, 10 décembre 1992, « Hydrogène par électrolyse de l’eau » par Alain Damien ; Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, volume 82, numéro 3, février 2018, pages 2440-2454.Water electrolysis is an electrolytic process that breaks down water (H2O) into dioxygen (denoted O2 or oxygen below) and dihydrogen (denoted H2 or hydrogen below) gas using an electric current. The electrolytic cell consists of two electrodes - usually an inert metal (in the considered potential and pH range) such as platinum - immersed in an electrolyte (here water itself) and connected to opposite poles of the source of direct current. Several electrolysis technologies have been developed, one can for example refer to the following articles and reviews: Materials Science for Energy Technologies, volume 2, number 3, December 2019, pages 442-454; International Journal of Engineering and Advanced Technology, Volume 4, Issue 3, February 2015, pages 80-93; Engineering techniques, ref. : j6366, December 10, 1992, “Hydrogen by electrolysis of water” by Alain Damien; Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, Volume 82, Issue 3, February 2018, pages 2440-2454.
Eur. J., volume 25, numéro 20, avril 2019, pages 5149-5153.CO2 can be converted into aromatic compounds in the presence of a catalyst, see for example the following article: Chem. Eur. J., volume 25, number 20, April 2019, pages 5149-5153.
In the context described above, a first object of the present description is to overcome the problems of the prior art and to valorize carbon, and in particular bio-sourced carbon in the form of CO and CO2, into compounds with high added value, and especially in aromatic compounds. Specifically, the present invention relates to a device and a method for maximizing the production of aromatics for the petrochemical industry allowing, when the aromatic compounds are produced by oxycombustion of hydrocarbon compounds rich in oxygen (e.g. having an elemental oxygen content at least greater than 1% by weight, preferably at least 3% by weight, very preferably at least 5% by weight) such as biomass, to convert (for example all) CO2 and CO, by-products of oxycombustion, into paraffins and additional aromatic compounds.
The invention is based on the conversion of carbon dioxide, i.e., CO2, and carbon monoxide, i.e., CO, resulting from an oxycombustion process of hydrocarbon compounds rich in oxygen, in paraffins and in aromatic compounds which are introduced in an aromatic complex, and in particular on the arrangement of one or more units allowing the conversion of CO2 into aromatic compounds in one step in a dedicated aromatization reactor. The aromatic compounds resulting from the conversion of CO2 are treated within an aromatic complex.
The device and the method according to the invention further comprise one or more water gas conversion units (or WGS or "Water Gas Shift" according to the English terminology) to at least partially convert the CO into CO2 and thus obtaining a CO2-enriched gas, followed by a CO2 aromatization unit. Preferably, at the outlet of the CO2 aromatization unit, the CO produced and the unconverted CO2 are recycled at the inlet of the WGS unit. The conversion of CO and CO2 can then be complete. The aromatic compounds resulting from the aromatization of CO2 are introduced into the aromatic complex to be transformed there into benzene and paraxylene.
Preferably, the H2 necessary for the conversion of CO2 is entirely supplied by a unit for electrolysis of the water produced by the process (at the output of the CO2 aromatization stage). The oxygen necessary for the oxycombustion is also preferably supplied by said unit for electrolysis of the water produced by the process. Thus the process according to the invention does not require the supply of water, hydrogen or external oxygen, which is a notable advantage because it makes it possible to preserve the biosourced character of the aromatic compounds produced, without requiring units hydrogen production, for example by steam reforming of natural gas.
