Un procédé d’identification automatique d’un véhicule ferroviaire dans un lieu prédéterminé d’un réseau ferroviaire, le procédé comportant une étape de mesure (E1) des instants de passage (t1-t4) des essieux du véhicule ferroviaire à identifier, une étape de fourniture (E2) d’une base de données (2) associant un type de motrice ferroviaire, ayant quatre essieux ferroviaires, à au moins trois distances inter-essieux (ai, bi, ci), une étape de calcul (E3) d’au moins trois vitesses inter-essieux spéculatives (Vai, Vbi, Vci, Vdi), une étape de détermination (E4) d’un écart type (σi) des vitesses inter-essieux spéculatives (Vai, Vbi, Vci, Vdi) et une étape de sélection (E5) du type de motrice ferroviaire en fonction dudit écart type (σi).
