L'appareil comporte au moins une interface série (38, 40), un emplacement dans une mémoire (24), une pluralité de protocoles d'interface à l'emplacement dans la mémoire (24) et une logique communiquant avec l'emplacement dans la mémoire (24). La logique est conçue pour être codée avec au moins un protocole parmi la pluralité de protocoles d'interface en fonction de données à l'interface série (38, 40).
