L'accès à des services en ligne peut cependant nécessiter l'utilisation d'un compte utilisateur et donc l'identification de l'utilisateur. C'est par exemple le cas pour des services de type téléachat ou pout l'accès à un contenu sur un réseau social de type FacebookTM par exemple. Lors de la création du compte utilisateur, ce dernier choisit (ou se voit imposer) un identifiant éventuellement accompagné d'un mot de passe. Dans ce qui suit, les données nécessaires à l'accès à un compte utilisateur sont appelées « identifiant propre à l'utilisateur ». Aucune restriction n'est attaché à un tel identifiant, qui peut notamment comprendre toute suite de caractères alphanumériques. Ainsi, l'accès à un compte utilisateur depuis un dispositif d'affichage connecté peut requérir la saisie d'un identifiant et d'un mot de passe.
