Process for manufacturing, by mechanosynthesis, a powder of the compound Cu2ZnSnS4, the process comprising a step in which the milling of a mixture is carried out, said mixture containing: - the chemical elements Sn and S in elemental form; ZnS and Cu3Sn precursors; the mixture containing Cu, Zn, Sn and S in the stoichiometric proportions in which they are found in the compound Cu2ZnSnS4. The invention also relates to the use of the process for producing a thin layer, which is incorporated in particular into the composition of a photovoltaic cell.
