Abstract
Description
A method of manufacturing a cored wire comprising a lining of a material intended to be introduced into a liquid metal and an outer envelope made of a metal strip, and wire thus manufactured The invention relates to metallurgy, and more particularly the addition to a liquid metal of materials intended to regulate its composition and / or the composition of the non-metallic inclusions it contains, these materials being contained in a wire-shaped metal casing which is unrolled and injected into the liquid metal. The addition of relatively small and precise amounts of materials to a liquid metal, such as liquid steel, is often accomplished by means of "cored wires" in the form of coils. The cored wire is composed of the material to be added, in a powder form, enclosed in a metal casing made of a metal whose composition is compatible with that of the treated liquid metal. In the case of the treatment of a liquid steel, this envelope is itself advantageously made of steel. The function of the material can be to precisely modify the composition of the liquid metal and / or to combine with the non-metallic inclusions, for example, with the inclusions of oxides of a steel, to modify their composition and their morphology. Calcium intended to transform the inclusions of alumina and silicoaluminates into calcium aluminates or silicoaluminates to improve the flowability of the steel and its mechanical properties is thus often introduced into the liquid steel by this method, in the form of pure Ca or of SiCa. In some cases, one or more intermediate layers are added between the powder and the envelope, for example paper, moistened paper, metallized paper or metal, to adjust the overall heat transfer coefficient between the liquid metal and the powder. , and thus delay the complete melting of the wire (see in particular document FR-A-2,871,477). This ensures that the powder will come into contact with the liquid metal at a depth as large as desired, which is favorable to the addition efficiency of the materials. This is particularly the case when easily evaporable materials such as calcium are present in the powder.
Compared to other techniques for adding materials to a liquid metal, the cored wire has the following main advantages. The depth at which the material comes into contact with the liquid metal can be more accurately controlled than if the material is added as solid pieces before it passes through the supernatant slag layer on the surface of the metal. And the addition is performed more calmly than if the material was injected in the form of a powder propelled by a neutral gas using a lance immersed in the liquid metal. For these reasons, the addition efficiency of the material is as high as possible, in particular when the material is easily oxidizable and / or vaporizable, such as calcium, titanium, lead, rare earths, etc. Most often, the cored wire is manufactured as follows. The metal strip, usually a few tenths of a mm (typically 0.2 to 0.6 mm), constituting the envelope is scrolled and shaped to give it a U-shaped cross section. The edges of the strip are also shaped by folding, in a manner that will subsequently staple them to each other. The finely divided powder is deposited on the strip to fill the U to a given level, then the two edges of the strip are gradually brought together, and finally stapled. During this approximation, the powder tends to be compacted, which reduces its porosity. It is thus generally intended to obtain the lowest porosity possible to have a mass of powder per meter of wire as high as possible. This allows, for a given unwinding speed of the wire, to introduce a maximum amount of powder in a minimum of time. Another method of manufacture, described in document WO-A-2006/079832, consists of joining the edges of the strip not by stapling, but by welding, for example by butt-welding or laser welding. . The yarn thus obtained can then undergo rolling and / or stretching which reduces its diameter and increases the compaction of the powder. A stapled closed yarn does not allow such an operation, so that the filling rate of the yarn and the compactness of the packing can not be significantly improved after stapling.
Closing the wire by welding is well suited to the case where the strip has a relatively high thickness. Such a high final thickness (of the order of 1 mm for a steel strip, or even more, for example 1.5 mm) may be desired, on the one hand to give the cored wire a rigidity that will allow it more assuredly to cross the layer of slag, which is more or less solid, and the liquid metal without bending, and secondly to delay the melting of the envelope. As it is usually practiced, the latter technique, however, has several disadvantages. Closing the wire by welding requires not to fill the U-shaped strip as much as it would be desirable when the powder is flammable, especially if it contains calcium. Indeed, there is a risk of inflammation of the powder if it is too close to the region of the weld. Even after the subsequent rolling / drawing, the compactness of the powder in the final wire is not always ideal. In practice, elongations of the order of 100 to 500% of the metal shell during rolling / drawing are common. To obtain them, numerous and / or powerful formatting tools are necessary. In addition, these elongations lead to a hardening and embrittlement of the casing, which may cause it to break during unwinding of the wire. This risk can be limited by appropriately choosing the material of the envelope, for example by using a microalloyed low carbon steel titanium and niobium. But this increases the cost of the wire, and if the microalloy elements of the envelope are undesirable in the metal to be treated, this method is not usable. The object of the invention is to provide a method of manufacturing a flux-cored wire with a welded envelope making it possible to obtain maximum compactness of the material it contains, without requiring for this purpose very large deformations of the wire after the solder the outer envelope.
For this purpose, the subject of the invention is a process for manufacturing a cored wire comprising a lining of a material intended to be introduced into a liquid metal and an outer envelope consisting of a metal strip, according to which the lining is placed. on the strip, the edges of the strip are brought closer to one another and joined to one another by welding, characterized in that said packing is in the form of a bar before being placed on the strap. The bar constituting the lining may be coated with at least one envelope intended to constitute an intermediate envelope between the lining and the outer envelope of the cored wire prior to its placement on the strip. The envelope or envelopes may be paper, polymer or metal.
Said metal may be a reactive metal such as aluminum. After welding the edges of the strip, it is possible to carry out at least one rolling and / or drawing operation of the cored wire. The drawing and / or rolling operation of the cored wire can provide the cored wire with an elongation rate of at most 25 ° / 0, preferably between 10 and 20 ° / 0.
Said bar may have been obtained by extrusion. Said bar may have been obtained by continuous casting. It can have rolled said bar after obtaining. Said bar may be calcium or calcium alloy. The invention also relates to a cored wire comprising a lining of a material intended to be introduced into a liquid metal and an outer envelope consisting of a metal strip, characterized in that it was obtained by the above method. As will be understood, the invention is based first of all on a prior conditioning of the material intended to fill the wire in the form of a bar, instead of the finely divided powder usually used to fill the closed cored wires by welding. This bar can be obtained by various means, such as extrusion alone, extrusion followed by rolling, continuous casting of a material initially in the liquid or pasty state, optionally followed by rolling. Preferably after the strip has been shaped U, the bar is deposited on the strip. Then, for the closure of the cored wire, the two edges of the strip are brought together and welded, as in the conventional technique described in WO-A-2006/079832. Finally, preferably, the wire thus obtained undergoes at least one rolling and / or stretching to press the casing against the bar, and thus expel the little residual air. This rolling or drawing typically provides the yarn with an elongation of at most 25%, preferably between 10 and 20%. Of course, it is not essential that the strip is already U-shaped during the deposit of the bar. This conformation may intervene only subsequently, prior to the approximation of the edges of the strip for their welding, or even be removed. The U-shaped preconditioning of the strip only facilitates the positioning of the bar, whereas it is essential in the case of the conventional use of a powdery lining to ensure that the powder will not leave the strip before or during the approximation of the edges of the strip. The bar of material to be added in the liquid metal can be obtained by extrusion by means of a press of a billet of said material through a die of determined diameter. The billets used for such an extrusion operation are typically of a cylindrical shape, and have an initial diameter typically between 80 and 300 mm and an initial length typically between 500 and 1300 mm. The billets can be made of a pure material (calcium or magnesium for example) or an alloy. But, as has been said, other processes for obtaining the bar are possible. The cohesion and compactness of the bar can be improved by rolling, which confers its final diameter before placement on the strip. The advantages of the invention with respect to the introduction of the filler material of the powdered cored wire are as follows.
The packing being in the form of a solid, it is easier to deposit and maintain on the strip than if it was in the form of a powder.
The bar may immediately have a high compactness, optimally close to 100% of the theoretical density of the material, especially if its manufacture has been concluded by rolling. Because of its compactness, and therefore the small surface exposed to the atmosphere, the bar is less easily flammable than a finely divided powder, with identical composition. It is therefore possible to use a bar whose upper surface is found at a relatively short distance from the weld, so whose diameter is virtually identical to the inside diameter of the wire casing after welding. For these reasons, on the final wire, a fortiori if the wire has undergone a rolling / drawing operation after the welding of the envelope, one finds itself with a mass of material per meter of maximum wire, with a compactness of the material as well. as close as possible to 100 ° / o. This reduces the length of wire to be used to introduce a given amount of material in the liquid metal, all things being equal.
The material contains less atmospheric oxygen than if it was initially in the form of a powder, which has a significant metallurgical advantage: there is a lower pollution of the liquid metal by this atmospheric oxygen and a better material addition efficiency. oxidizable (calcium, magnesium ...). The rolling / drawing operations which eventually follow the welding of the casing to bring the cored wire to its final diameter, with a casing enclosing the bar closest to, may be of a limited extent. Where an elongation of the flux-cored wire from 100 to 5000/0 was necessary with the process using powder to obtain a suitable compactness of the lining, an elongation of 250/0 at the most, typically from 10 to 200/0, to effectively flatten the liner. envelope against the bar and make a good compromise between obtaining a high compactness of the introduced material and an elongation that does not reduce too much the amount of product supplied per meter of unwound wire, may be sufficient for this purpose. This greatly simplifies wire shaping treatments, which can make use only tools of low power and / or in small numbers, and also considerably limit the embrittlement of the envelope. It is therefore no longer useful to use a relatively expensive material to form the envelope. The use of a bar instead of a powder also makes it possible to obtain substantial gains, both technical and economic, on the conditioning of the wire coils. Indeed, because of the extreme stiffness of the thick and strongly rolled / stretch welded woven wire from the process described in WO-A-2006/079832, the wire cage enclosing the wire coil must be oversized with respect to usual coil packaging to avoid any unwanted breakage of the wire and ensure a good reeling. The use of a bar instead of a powder allowing, as has been said, significantly reduce the stiffness of the wire, a standard package of the coil can be used again without risk. Finally, the low rate of elongation necessary to obtain a wire of maximum compactness makes it possible to use a strip whose initial thickness is close to its final thickness, or even to it if it turns out that one can do without post-weld rolling / drawing. This strip therefore requires for its welding power reduced compared to that required by the method of WO-A-2006/079832, for a given final thickness.
All these advantages are that the disadvantage of the need to condition in the form of a bar the material to be injected into the metal, which is more expensive than simply depositing a powder of said material on the strip during the manufacture of the yarn, is largely offset by the savings achievable on the subsequent stages of yarn manufacturing and by the metallurgical and practical advantages resulting from the use of the yarn thus manufactured. Also, it is thus possible to pack in the form of cored wire materials that would not be grindable in the form of powder. The invention is also applicable to the case where the cored wire has one or more intermediate layers between the lining and the strip constituting the outer envelope.
As has been said, this or these intermediate layers generally have the function of regulating the heat transfer between the liquid metal and the lining so as to delay the complete melting of the wire to increase the depth of introduction of the material constituting the lining. , all things being equal. They may be made in particular of paper, possibly moistened, metallized paper, polymer, metal ... For this purpose, it is advantageous to achieve a coating of the bar by this intermediate layer, or at least one of these intermediate layers, and preferably all of them if there are several, prior to the placement of the bar on the strip constituting the outer layer of the cored wire. In this way, it ensures more cohesion of the bar when placed on the strip. In addition, it is not complicated to perform the closure and welding of the strip constituting the outer layer, in that this welding does not need to extend to the intermediate layers, in that the intermediate layers do not interfere. or just with the outer layer during welding, and in that as these intermediate layers are already closed when the closing of the wire begins, it is not necessary to ensure their proper placement during this closure. If the bar is coated with a metal sheet, itself closed, for example, by a light welding requiring a small amount of energy because of the thinness of the sheet, this sheet can protect the bar during the welding the outer casing and will deform more easily than a sheet of paper during the rolling / drawing which eventually follows the closure of the wire casing. The metal casing can also have a metallurgical function: for example if it is made of aluminum and if the cored wire is injected into liquid steel, it can locally deoxidize the steel and thus increase the addition efficiency. of the material constituting the bar if it is easily oxidizable. By way of example, of course not limiting, the invention can be implemented as follows: hot extrusion (at 350-400 ° C.) of a billet of metallic calcium of initial diameter 120 mm, for obtain a coiled coil of Ce with a diameter of 8.5 mm; deposit of the extruded bar unrolled on a steel strip 1 mm thick and 36 mm wide, profiling the strip in the form of a wire of diameter 11.5 mm which is closed by laser welding to obtain the flux-cored wire in an intermediate state; - Then rolling the cored wire to give it a final diameter of 10.5 mm, with, therefore, an elongation rate of 11% .20
