Abstract

The device has an optical fiber (12) through which a light beam is made to travel and containing an element i.e. polymer film (36), sensitive to an oxygenated compound contained in a fuel. The sensitive element absorbs the compound, and optical characteristics of the sensitive element are changed according to absorption of the compound. The sensitive element is arranged on a surface (38) of a free end (34) of the optical fiber such that a refraction index of the sensitive element is measured. The polymer film covers the surface of the free end of the optical fiber. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting an oxygenated compound in a fuel.
