Abstract

The sock has a knitted or woven envelope extended from a foot till the top of the calf or till the top of the thigh. The envelope contains elastic threads having different elasticity properties for tensioning knitting. Two rigid zones (1, 3) enclose an elastic zone to create a gusset zone to propel blood towards the top. One of the rigid zones is supported on a tibial edge and is extended from a patella tip till the base of the tibia. The other rigid zone surrounds a calf pump from the top towards the bottom. The elastic zone is extended between the rigid zones.

Description

The venous insufficiency of the lower limbs is due to an abnormality of the venous return. In the lower part of the body below the heart, the orthostatic pressure (pressure exerted by a column of water and depending on the height of this water column), gene venous return to the body. Physiologically, to allow venous return from the bottom to the top and the heart, there are two dominant mechanisms in the lower limbs: An active mechanism linked to muscular contraction at the level of the calf: it is the calf pump. In contracting the muscles crush the venous network and flush the blood.

A passive mechanism: the valve network which aims to direct the blood flow generated by the muscular pump of the calf, the superficial venous network towards the deep venous network (ostial valves), then to direct the blood flow from the bottom to the high.

The varicose disease of the lower limbs is the consequence of a dysfunction of these systems. The compression of the lower limbs by elastic medical tissues has long shown its effectiveness on venous insufficiency of the lower limbs.

In the form of socks, thighs or pantyhose, these medical tissues exert pressure on the lower limb. The pressure is not uniform. There is a pressure gradient from the bottom to the top, the highest pressures being at the level of the ankle and the pressure decreases going up to the root of the lower limb. This pressure gradient improves the venous return in several ways: compression of the dilated superficial venous network, reduction of interstitial edema, reorientation of the venous flow, of the superficial venous network towards the deep venous network, reorientation of the venous flow from the top down.

This pressure gradient thus improves the physiological effect of muscular pumping of the calf and the valve network present at the level of the wall of the veins. -2- The specifications for the manufacture of such products is. perfectly codified. To be reimbursed by Social Security, the specifications are particularly strict.

However, two types of son can be used, provided that the specifications for the pressure gradient exerted on the lower limb are complied with: very elastic fibers with a compressive effect, and much less elastic threads with a protective effect.

Elastic threads exert a dynamic or active compressive effect. During muscle contraction, the fibers of the stretched tissue will exert a greater amount of pressure on the muscle tissue as these fibers are stretched. The products thus obtained are very stretchable, easy to put on. But at rest, the pressures exerted are less.

Containing fibers have a rather passive action. They are not very extensible and have the effect of an inextensible box during the effort. The contracting muscle can not expand in width as it is surrounded by a loose envelope, which directs the vascular flow upwards. The products obtained with these yarns are not stretchable and exert a significant pressure even at rest.

Usually, both types of wires are not used in the same product.

While improving venous return has a beneficial effect in pathology, it may also be of interest to the athlete.

Although the scientific literature is still scarce, several studies confirm a beneficial effect of venous compression in athletes. Two fields of use are possible: 30 - improvement of the performance during the effort. The improvement of venous return allows an improvement of the tissue oxygenation, a decrease of the storage of harmful degradation product inside the muscle (lactic acid) and a decrease of the interstitial edema. In theory, improved venous return could increase cardiac output and thus max V02. For a standard contention, however, the scientific evidence of improved athletic performance is lacking. favoring recovery between two periods of effort. The improvement of venous return would avoid the stagnation of degradation products generated by the effort in the muscle such as lactic acid and oxidizing agents that would cause cramps, feeling of heaviness or stiffness. This purging effect also avoids a hyperosmolar effect of the degradation products, causing edema. This aspect of recovery is increasingly taken into account among athletes who multiply draining massage after effort, cold baths in the lower limbs. There are already lower extremity compressive products used by athletes, either to improve performance or to promote recovery.

The first object of our patent is to improve the performance of venous drainage by combining in the weaving of socks, low, mid-low or low, compressive and compressive effect fibers. By combining the two types of woven fibers according to well-defined specifications, we greatly increase the efficiency of the venous return system. According to the invention, this bottom comprises three well-defined zones: a first rigid zone (No. 1) which rests on the tibial edge, extending from the tip of the patella to the base of the tibia and extending on each side of the ankle to provide proprioceptive recall and stability of the ankle. A second very rigid zone (No. 3) flanking the calf pump from top to bottom in order to constrain it at the time of the effort and its development. This area will also frame the Achilles tendon to protect it and prevent it from vibrating. - Between these two areas (No. 1 and 3), a third highly elastic zone (No. 2) with a high power of return to create a "bellows effect" which increases the power of the muscular pump 30 calf.

The second aim of our patent is to offer ankle reinforcement of the ligamentous structures of the ankle and stabilization of the Achilles tendon. It is the little lateral elastic fibers located at the level of the calf which laterally stabilize the ankle and the Achilles tendon. The expected effect is a decrease in sprains and micro-traumatisms of the ligaments of the ankle and Achilles tendon.
