The present invention relates to an ignition method. It is particularly applicable in the field of controlled ignition systems for gasoline engines.
The process of igniting the gasoline by a spark plug in the cylinder of an internal combustion engine is broken down into three phases. A first phase, called the breakdown phase, makes it possible to create the first ions ionized in the ambient environment and thus to absorb the ignition energy. The breakdown phase lasts a few nanoseconds. A second phase, called the arc phase because it is during this phase that the electric arc is formed between the two electrodes of the candle, allows to initiate an autonomous local combustion reaction. The arc phase lasts about 15 microseconds. A third phase, called the transition phase, allows the laminar flame core to evolve into an autonomous turbulent flame. The transition phase lasts a few milliseconds. Two electrical processes are commonly used to implement these three ignition phases: the capacitive discharge process and the inductive discharge process. The capacitive discharge process is better known by the acronym CDI meaning Capacitive Discharge Ignition. It is widely used for mopeds, in the HONDA CDI module for example. It is also very used in motor racing. By the capacitive discharge method, the cumulative duration of the breakdown phase and the arc phase is small, this cumulative duration being less than 0.4 milliseconds. To compensate for this short cumulative duration, the energy efficiency of these two cumulative phases is improved thanks to very high deposited currents, up to 1 ampere during the arc phase. Indeed, in the case of a highly supercharged engine, the available electrical power promotes breakdown. And in the case of an engine operating with a lean or diluted mixture, for example an engine diluted with the EGR by the acronym Exhaust Gas Recirculation, which reinjects into the cylinder a portion of the gases from the previous combustion, the energy efficiency promotes breakdown and initiation of combustion. However, the capacitive discharge process has many disadvantages. Firstly, the short duration of the arc does not favor the evolution of the laminar flame into a turbulent flame because the energy supply to the environment is quickly completed. Secondly, the arc duration is also too low for laminated Direct Injection Petrol (IDE) applications, which are becoming more widespread and for which the duration of the spark duration is relatively long, of the order about 2 milliseconds, is a guarantee of robustness. Finally, the presence of strong electric currents can rapidly degrade the electrodes of the candle. The inductive discharge process, meanwhile, is universally deployed in motor vehicles, thanks to engine control units BOSCH or Siemens for example. By the inductive discharge method, the arc current at the spark plugs is low, of the order of 0.1 amperes, but the time scales are longer than for the capacitive discharge process. Although less robust, the spark is present longer and is therefore a bit more favorable in the case of a stratified IDE application. However, the energy efficiency of the system is degraded and the breakdown voltages quickly become insufficient to ignite mixtures with a high load, particularly in the case of a supercharged engine. And in the case of an engine operating with a lean or diluted mixture, the breakdown is not robust because the engine becomes highly unstable. In addition, the ignition coil is larger and heavier than that used for a capacitive discharge process. The improvement of the known ignition processes today simply involves the adjustment of various electrical parameters having an influence on the three phases of the ignition process. But it is clear that these processes are no longer suitable for all modes of injection of the future, the engines of the future can be highly supercharged, operate with a high dilution of exhaust gas, operate with a poor mixture or still work in stratified IDE. The present invention proposes in particular to solve this technical problem.
The invention aims in particular to overcome the aforementioned drawbacks, by controlling the arc current and the arc duration as needed the motor load. According to the invention, the arc begins with a strong current. Then, the arc is kept under control in current and duration. Finally, the arc ends with a reverse current phase. The invention proposes to synchronize these steps with the phases of the motor load, which varies from a low load to a strong load through a transient load, and ends with a lean phase. For this purpose, the invention relates to an ignition process for igniting a fuel-1 oxidant mixture in a cylinder of a motor. It comprises a breakdown phase during which a capacitive discharge generates a current whose intensity is high, the discharge current rapidly ionizing the mixture and generating a first arc in the cylinder between the electrodes of a candle. It comprises an arc phase during which the arc is maintained by a capacitive discharge whose discharge current is slaved to the value of the ion current of the candle. It comprises a transition phase during which a second arc of inverse polarity is generated by an inductive discharge from the electrical energy stored in a coil during the breakdown phase and during the arc phase. Advantageously, in the breakdown phase, the arc can be interrupted at the occurrence of an inflection of the current at a primary ignition coil. In one embodiment, in the breakdown phase, the arc duration can be adjustable for each ignition by means of a software instruction sent by an ignition computer. For example, the arc duration may be substantially 10 microseconds. During the breakdown phase, the current can also be adjusted to each ignition by means of a software command sent by an ignition computer. For example, the current can be adjusted from substantially 100 milliamps when the pressure is low in the cylinder to substantially 600 milliamps when the pressure is high in the cylinder. For example, during the arc phase, the discharge current can be maintained for a time varying from substantially 100 microseconds to substantially 600 microseconds. The discharge current can be maintained at substantially 100 milliamps. In one embodiment, during the arc phase, the discharge current can be slaved by high frequency cutting. The duration of holding the discharge current can be adjustable by a software setpoint.
For example, during the transition phase, the duration of the second arc may be substantially 600 microseconds. Advantageously, in case of inconsistency between the discharge current and the software setpoint during the arc phase, the discharge current can be set to a given value. A diagnostic signal can be sent to an ignition control computer.
The main advantages of the invention are that it makes it possible to improve the robustness of the ignition, favoring, on the one hand, the starting and on the other hand the priming of the catalyst, this even under strong deterioration of the advance on ignition.

Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description given with reference to the accompanying drawings which show: FIG. 1, by a graph, an illustration of an example of a current at the terminals of a primary ignition coil according to the prior art; FIG. 2, by a block diagram, an illustration of an example of a device implementing the method according to the invention; - Figure 3, by two graphs, an illustration of an example of current and candle voltage in a device implementing the method according to the invention.
FIG. 1 illustrates by a graph an example of measurable current at a primary ignition coil according to the prior art. The abscissa indicates the time in milliseconds and the ordinate indicates an intensity in amperes. A curve C represents the variation as a function of time of the intensity of the current flowing through a primary ignition coil according to the prior art. The curve C has an inflection at a moment to. As explained below, the present invention advantageously proposes, during the breakdown phase, to interrupt the arc at the onset of such an inflection of the current at the primary ignition coil. The present invention proposes to drive judiciously the current by a software instruction, this for each ignition.
FIG. 2 illustrates by a block diagram an example of a device 1o implementing the method according to the invention. The device of FIG. 2 comprises a spark plug 1, a battery 2, a high-voltage generator 3, a capacitor 4, a MOSFET transistor 5, a diode 6, a primary coil 7 and a secondary coil 8 forming a transformer, a resistor 9 and a MOSFET transistor 10. The device also comprises a control automaton 11 controlled by an ignition computer. The controller 11 provides a command CDE1 and a command CDE2 from a SECONDARY current. Thanks to the transistor 5, the diode 6, the primary coil 7, the secondary coil 8, the resistor 9 and the transisitor 10 controlled by the controller 11, the cycle described below is performed. The controller 11 drives the transistor 5 in the permanent conduction phase. When the current passing through the resistor 9 reaches a set value determined in the control PLC 11, this setpoint value being requested by the ignition computer in the form of a software setpoint, the control PLC 11 driver cyclically transistor 10 in the conductive phase and non-conductive phase. In particular, when this setpoint current is reached, the transistor 10 becomes off and the current flowing in the primary coil 7 flows again via the diode 6 and the transistor 5. In particular, when the current 30 passing through the resistor 9 reaches a low threshold defined by the ignition computer, then the controller 11 again controls the transistor 10 to establish a new cycle. In a degraded mode where the secondary current at the resistor 9 is no longer observable, it is possible, thanks to the shape of the envelope current at the level of the transistor 5, the diode 6 and the primary coil 7, to neglect the secondary current at the level of the resistor 9. The current sent into the spark plug 1 is limited by following a predetermined law supplied by the control automaton 11. Thanks to the control automaton 11, if the current at the level of the transistor 5, of the diode 6 and the primary coil 7 exceeds a threshold, this threshold corresponding to the case where the candle 1 is defective, then the current is no longer sent and the cylinder-candle assembly is no longer supplied.
The graph at the top of FIG. 3 illustrates an example of current 1 o between the electrodes of the candle 1, the abscissa indicating the time in milliseconds and the ordinate indicating an intensity in milliamperes. The bottom graph of Figure 3 illustrates an example of voltage between the electrodes of the candle 1, the abscissa indicating the time in milliseconds and the ordinate indicating a voltage in kilovolts. It appears that the invention combines the advantages of the capacitive process and the advantages of the inductive process, without presenting their disadvantages. Like the capacitive process, the invention makes it possible to generate an arc between the electrodes of the candle 1 between an instant t1 = 5.0123 milliseconds and an instant t4 = 6.3779 milliseconds. The arc is characterized in particular by a strong current at the beginning of an arc, of the order of 348.361 milliamperes at an instant t2 = 5.078 milliseconds. The strong current is followed by a holding current, of the order of 100 milliamps for example to not degrade the electrodes of the candle 1. The holding current lasts until a time t3 = 5,6720 milliseconds where it fall to a value of -166.858 milliamperes. Like the inductive method, the invention makes it possible to generate a second arc between instants t3 and t4, to ensure correct ignition in case of poor or dilute mixing. The arc duration can thus reach a total duration of the order of 1.4 milliseconds, with turbo boost pressures of the order of 4 bars. Thus, the ignition method according to the invention is suitable for new supercharged applications generating high chamber pressures and requiring high breakdown voltages at the level of the electrodes of the spark plug 1, of the order of -30 kilovolts to 1 instant t2 in the example of FIG. 3. The ignition method according to the invention also allows operations under a dilute or poor environment requiring not only a high energy efficiency in the breakdown phase, but also an arc duration. relatively long. This long arc duration also provides robust operation in stratified IDE applications.
The invention described above promotes the evolution of the laminar flame during the transition phase, thus facilitating the starting and priming phases of the exhaust catalyst.
