Un ordinateur tel qu'il est vendu habituellement dans le commerce suit toujours le même schéma de montage : un boîtier rectangulaire, ou châssis, à l'intérieur duquel sont vissés les différents composants nécessaires au fonctionnement de l'appareil. Ces composants sont principalement : La carte mère (1), la carte graphique (2), l'alimentation (3), le(s) disque(s) dur(s) (4), le(s) graveur(s) de CD/DVD (5). La plupart des ordinateurs sont traditionnellement montés suivant les figures 1 et 2. La carte graphique, branchée sur la carte mère, est horizontale, et toutes les prises dans lesquelles on doit brancher les différents câbles sont à l'arrière de la machine. Tous les fils doivent donc être branchés à l'arrière du châssis ; cela donne un aspect disgracieux, car chaotique et éparpillé, d'un nombre de fils assez conséquent (6), comme l'illustre la figure 3. On compte ainsi le gros câble d'alimentation principal, le câble de l'écran (voire le cas échéant d'un deuxième écran), le câble du clavier, de la souris, et souvent de l'imprimante, un câble réseau, celui de la prise son, auxquels il faut éventuellement rajouter ceux d'une ou plusieurs cartes additionnelles (capture vidéo par exemple) (7), et un nombre indéterminé de périphériques USB en tous genres.
