Abstract

The process is designed to heat an accumulator catalyzer (38) installed after a pre-catalyzer (36) in the exhaust system of an IC engine (12) having at least one combustion chamber (16) with controlled ignition, direct fuel injection and alternating lean and rich fuel/air mixtures. It comprises operating the engine in a first mode with stratified combustion charges and in a second mode with homogeneous charges. The lean fuel charges in the first mode are produced by a single fuel injection before ignition. and the rich charges by injecting a second dose of fuel after combustion. In the second mode the lean and rich fuel charges contain an additional dose of fuel prior to ignition. The first fuel dose is arranged so that its combustion produces the required engine torque, and in both cases the fuel charges are designed to give a lack of oxygen in the exhaust gases.
