METHOD FOR PROTECTING A STEEL SUBSTRATE OR
ALUMINUM ALLOY AGAINST CORROSION PERMITTING
TO GIVE IT TRIBOLOGICAL PROPERTIES,
AND SUBSTRATE OBTAINED
The invention relates to a method for protecting a steel or aluminum alloy substrate against corrosion and to give it predetermined tribological properties (surface properties such as hardness, abrasion resistance, adjustment of the coefficient of friction). The invention extends to protected substrates according to the above method.
In many areas of the art, it is sought to produce parts having both good corrosion resistance and predetermined surface properties depending on the application, in particular high hardness, good resistance to abrasion and abrasion. wear or surface lubricating properties. One of the current solutions for obtaining protection against corrosion consists in producing on the steel or aluminum alloy substrate the deposition of a metallic coating, in particular a standard Zinc / Nickel alloy coating. It is known that this alloy, which is widely used in particular in the mechanical industry, is a two-phase alloy having a nickel mass content of between 6 and 8%. Such a coating acts as a sacrificial layer undergoing corrosion in place of the substrate.
It should be noted that metallurgists have identified another Zinc / Nickel alloy which can also serve as a sacrificial layer: this alloy is a single-phase alloy with a proportion of nickel of the order of 14%, but it is very little currently used for the protection of mechanical parts, the standard two-phase alloy at 6 - 8% nickel corresponding to 99% of uses.
Furthermore, JP-5,033,162 proposes to include hard non-metallic particles in a coating in order to improve the mechanical strength properties thereof. This patent recommends the use of a coating made of an alloy of zinc and iron, and particles of silicon oxides SiO 2 or titanium nitride TiN.

The present invention proposes to provide a method for protecting a substrate made of steel or an aluminum alloy making it possible to obtain a protection of the substrate against corrosion that is more effective than the known processes, and to give it predetermined tribological properties. in particular hardness and abrasion and wear resistance properties or lubricating properties.
An object of the invention is in particular to provide coatings with anti-corrosion performance and mechanical properties (hardness, resistance to abrasion and wear) of the same order as those of chromium-on-steel coatings in view to allow a substitution of the latter compound for the purpose of environmental protection, or much higher than those of hard anodic oxidation layers on aluminum alloy.
Another objective of the invention, in the case where tribological lubrication properties are sought on the surface of the substrate, is to provide coatings with anti-corrosion performance and lubricant properties (low coefficient of friction) equivalent to low charges to those of cadmium coatings, in order to allow a substitution of the latter compound for the purpose of environmental protection, and much higher than those of these high-load cadmium coatings (it is known that the coefficient of friction cadmium grows rapidly with the applied load, due to the ductility of this metal).
For this purpose, the process according to the invention is of the type in which is deposited on the steel or aluminum alloy substrate, a composite coating of thickness greater than 3 microns formed, on the one hand, from minus a Zn-Ni zinc / nickel alloy matrix adhering to said substrate, on the other hand, particles dispersed in said matrix. According to the present invention, the composite coating is made with at least one matrix made of a single-phase Zn-Ni alloy in which the mass content of nickel is substantially between 12% and 20%, the particles dispersed in said matrix being chosen of a suitable nature. tribological properties sought.
In the case where the surface properties of hardness and resistance to abrasion and wear are desired for the substrate, the
<Desc/Clms Page number 3><Desc / Clms Page number 3>
On choisit de préférence pour lesdites particules une granulométrie telle que la dimension moyenne Dso desdites particules soit sensiblement comprise entre 0,01et 5 microns. particles dispersed in the single-phase Zn-Ni alloy matrix are advantageously ceramic particles of hardness greater than that of said matrix, in particular: carbides, in particular silicon carbide SiC, or oxides, in particular alumina A1203 or zirconia ZrO2. For said particles, a particle size is preferably chosen such that the average dimension Dso of said particles is substantially between 0.01 and 5 microns.
Experiments have shown that such a coating acts as a sacrificial layer giving exceptional protection against corrosion: placed in the same conditions of corrosion (accelerated corrosion test conditions), the coating according to the invention provides the substrate a lifetime more than three times longer than that obtained by a known type of coating made by means of a standard two-phase Zn-Ni alloy of the same thickness. In addition, the abrasion resistance of the composite coating according to the invention is of the order of 5 to 7 times greater than that of a standard two-phase Zn-Ni coating comprising the same hard ceramic particles. This unexpected performance jump is hard to explain at the moment; it is conceivable that, in the case of the invention, the hard particles embedded in the single-phase Zinc / Nickel matrix are more rigidly locked, whereas they can undergo displacements in the standard alloy matrix whose plastic deformation is more important.
In the case where the tribological lubricating properties are sought for the substrate, the particles dispersed in the Zn-Ni single-phase alloy matrix are advantageously particles of organic polymers, in particular PTFE particles of polytetrafluoroethylene, or mineral particles. possessing lubricating properties, in particular of one or more compounds of the following group: sulphides, oxides, nitrides, especially molybdenum sulphide MoS2, boron nitride BN. These particles preferably have a particle size such that the average dimension D50 of said particles is substantially between 0.01 and 0.5 microns for the organic polymer particles, and substantially between 0.01 and 5 microns for the mineral particles.

Experiments have shown that the anticorrosive performance of the coating according to the invention was, as previously, much higher than those obtained with a coating of known type (standard two-phase Zn-Ni alloy of the same thickness). In addition, comparative tests have shown that the coefficient of friction of a substrate provided with the composite coating according to the invention was lowered to values of the order of 0.1, whereas the coefficient of friction of the single-phase alloy alone is of the order of 0.4. (Usually, the coefficient of friction is defined as the ratio of the measured tangential force that opposes the displacement to an applied force of 5 Newtons normal to the surface, the displacement speed being equal to 3.5 cm / s). In the case of a standard two-phase alloy coating, this coefficient is lowered by the incorporation of the particles only to values of the order of 0.2 to 0.25 (the coefficient of the two-phase alloy alone being of the order of 0.3). Here again, an explanation is difficult to give at the moment. It is conceivable that, in the coating according to the invention, the lubricating particles, generally of lamellar form, are released as and when wear is continuous and homogeneous, while in the standard Zi-Ni coating these particles are pushed inside the more plastic matrix without release as marked on the surface.
In the case where both surface properties of hardness and resistance to abrasion and wear and the tribological properties of lubrication are desired, the particles dispersed in the matrix comprise, on the other hand, ceramic particles of hardness greater than that of said matrix, on the other hand, particles of organic polymers or mineral particles having lubricating properties.
Dans un tel procédé électrolytique, la présence des particules The deposition of the composite coating on the substrate can be carried out in a manner known per se electrolytically using a zinc and nickel bath containing the particles in suspension, the contents of the metallic species of said bath and the electrical parameters being adjusted to obtain a single-phase alloy containing between 12% and 20% nickel, in particular between 14% and 17%. The single-phase alloy matrix of Zn-Ni has a thickness substantially between 5 and 30 microns. In such an electrolytic process, the presence of particles
<Desc/Clms Page number 5><Desc / Clms Page number 5>
présente l'avantage d'accroître la teneur en nickel de la matrice par rapport à celle obtenue à partir d'un bain sans particule : ceci est du au fait que les particules en suspension modifient la cinétique de réduction des espèces au voisinage des électrodes, le dépôt du nickel étant privilégié (il s'agit d'un constat difficile à expliquer). has the advantage of increasing the nickel content of the matrix relative to that obtained from a bath without particle: this is because the suspended particles modify the reduction kinetics of the species in the vicinity of the electrodes, the deposit of nickel being privileged (this is a difficult statement to explain).
In most applications, the volume percentage of particles dispersed in the single-phase Zn-Ni alloy matrix is selected substantially between 1% and 20%. This percentage will be adjusted according to the characteristics of the particles (size in particular) so as to obtain both, on the one hand, an effective protection against corrosion and tribological properties sought, on the other hand, a good cohesion of the coating.
In the case where a coating is sought which contains a high percentage of particles dispersed in the matrix, in particular a percentage substantially between 10% and 20%, the coating can be produced by the electrolytic process mentioned above, in confining particles suspended in the electrolytic bath near the surface of the substrate by means of a porous membrane.
Of course the composite coating deposited on the substrate according to the invention can undergo any routine post-treatment or finishing (conversion of the alloy to give it a given color or improved properties including anti-corrosion ...).

Preparation of the substrates before depositing:
The surface preparation consists of several phases, the main ones of which are: - degreasing, which consists in removing oils and greases from the surface of the pieces, - stripping, which consists in dissolving the chemical compounds formed between the metallic species constituting the substrate and the environment of it (oxides, carbides, ...), - the pre-deposit, necessary in some cases to promote adhesion, consists of depositing one or more intermediate layers by chemical processes. This step makes it possible to limit the reactivity of the substrates during the deposition step of the composite and to establish an accommodation gradient of the mechanical properties between the substrate and the coating.

It should be noted that the nature of the substrate has little influence on the macroscopic characteristics of the coating. As already indicated, the presence of particles in the electrolyte causes, whatever the deposition, a nickel enrichment of the matrix of 1 to 2%.
The structural variations of the zinc-nickel matrix composite coatings depend essentially on the nickel content of the alloy. If the nickel ion content of the suspension is varied, a phase diagram of the electrodeposited alloys is obtained, different from that obtained at thermodynamic equilibrium, where metastable phases appear. Up to a nickel content of 6%, the alloy consists only of the hexagonal phase II supersaturated and deformed zinc. Beyond this, the proportion of phase II decreases as the centered cubic phase begins to crystallize and then rapidly becomes important. Beyond 12%, the alloy is single-phase y.
In the region of existence of the phase II, we observe facies of geometric grains of quasi-hexagonal shape, whereas in that of the phase y the deposits are smooth (Ra <0.3), uniform and present an aspect gloss.

The corrosion and tribological characteristics of the 12-16% single-phase nickel-ZnNi / SiC composite deposits are provided below and compared to the 6-8% two-phase nickel deposits in the matrix. a - anticorrosive properties
The deposits studied are 10 m thick on an XC10 steel substrate. These coatings were subjected to a chromic finishing treatment and a heat treatment of 8 hours at 190 C.
The following table shows a big difference in corrosion resistance (red rusting time) for both types of deposits. (Characterizations in salt spray according to standard NFX41-002). Single-phase deposits with a nickel content of between 12 and 16% have significantly higher corrosion resistance than two-phase nickel containing 6-8% nickel. It should be noted that the presence of a scratch does not change the time of appearance of red rust in the case of coatings 12-15% nickel.

<SEP> ZnNi / SiC <SEP> Repository <SEP> Appearance of <SEP><SEP> Appearance of <SEP>

The depths and widths of scratches made under the same conditions on the various treatments were then measured with a 3D rugosimeter. It should first be noted that the averages of the values obtained on the coatings according to the invention, whether they are produced on steel or on aluminum, respectively 156 m2 and 157 m2, are identical, which makes it possible to think that the substrate has little influence. With an average scratch surface of 156 m 2, the coating according to the invention has better supported this stress than the OAD (370 m 2). On the other hand, if the chemical nickel does not perform much better with 125m2, the treated nickel and the nickel sulphate are much more resistant, respectively 60 and 45 m2.

c - Essais pion-disque
When one body slides on another, it opposes a resistance to the movement called friction, characterized by a coefficient of friction and a rate of wear (measured in particular by a loss of mass). In order to compare the performances of the Zn-Ni / SiC coatings with that of the other coatings selected, a series of tests was carried out on the different samples using a pion-disk tribometer by measuring the losses of mass. The tests were carried out without lubrication under a load of 1 kg, and a rotation speed of the disc of 2 m / s at room temperature, with as an antagonist hemispherical pions of nitrided CD steel. Mass loss is measured after 1000 and 10000 cycles. The parameters of the test were fixed by a pre-series of tests making it possible to obtain a representative result on all the pairs pion / coating. The results of the characterizations are reported in the following table:

<Tb>

(The sign - corresponds to a transfer of material)
If one observes the values obtained after 10000 cycles, on aluminum first, the loss of average mass of the Zn-Ni / SiC of the invention is 17.6 mg, against more than 89 mg for the hard anodic oxidation . The wear resistance of Zn-Ni / SiC according to the invention is therefore the highest. On steel, the wear resistance of electrolytic nickel, hard chromium and thermally treated nickel appears very high. During the test and especially after 10000 cycles, the loss of mass is negligible, the deposits are very little altered (for these coatings, there is a mass transfer, and it is the pawn that undergoes the phenomenon of wear) .

These tests are intended to characterize the corrosion performance after mechanical degradation of the coatings. Two mechanical stresses were therefore carried out on each of the test pieces: a stripe to the substrate, a technique which has the advantage of corresponding to a frequently encountered mode of wear, but which has the disadvantage of not being reproducible, and controlled mechanical degradations carried out by indentation in macro-hardness HRC under 150kg on steel and 45kg on aluminum.
Two results per test piece were thus obtained: the number of hours before appearance of red (steel) or white (aluminum) rust in the scratch and in the indentation.
The results obtained are summarized in the table below.

Red rust appears in less than 24 hours on scratches whatever the coating, with the exception of Zn-Ni and Zn-Ni / SiC according to the invention (the anomaly of the electrolytic nickel for which the bites in the scratch appeared after those in the indentations is to be attributed to the fact that the substrate was certainly not reached by the furrow). Surprisingly, the occurrence of pits in the indentations on the Zn-Ni / SiC coatings according to the invention occurred systematically well after those of zinc-nickel alone. The solicitation mode

II - DEPOSITION OF Zn-Ni / PTFE
The corrosion and tribological characteristics of 12-16% zinc-nickel / PTFE single-phase matrix nickel composite coatings are compared to nickel 6-8% two-phase matrix deposits. The elaboration parameters identical to those previously used lead to identical compositions, structures and corrosion performances.

The coefficients of friction were measured under the conditions already defined (applied force: 5 Newtons, moving speed: 3.5 cm / s).
Thus, in the case of the invention, a coefficient of friction of the same order of magnitude as that of a chromium coating four times thicker (below 90 m in thickness) is obtained, the chromium coating loses its properties. protective against corrosion due to cracking).
For the cadmium coating, the coefficient of friction is close to 1 because of the high force applied during the tests and measurements.
Corrosion resistance was similar for the three coatings in the last table.
