11 TOUCH SCREEN NAVIGATION PROCESS 11
The present invention relates to a method of navigation in a computer program by means of a touch screen. It finds a particularly interesting application in a personal digital assistant (PDA, "Personal Digital Assistant" in English) for launching an application or in general for navigation within a program or between several programs . However, the invention is of a broader scope since it can be applied to any communication tool comprising a touch screen and a data processing unit.
In current communication tools, such as microcomputers, there is an operating system capable of managing all the programs present on the computer.
In general, the man / machine interface of such an operating system has a set of active areas.
These active areas are commonly in the form of small fixed icons or else drop-down menus that can be activated by means of a small activation area. However, such a man / machine interface has many drawbacks when the screen is small, such as on laptops or PDAs. Indeed, the icons are so reduced that they become illegible and difficult to access. Similarly, the drop-down menus are difficult to activate since the activation area is also considerably reduced. With such an interface, handling the mouse becomes difficult. Each operating system includes in particular an icon magnification program, however such an action has the effect of limiting the useful work area.
The problems which have just been mentioned are slightly alleviated by the use of a touch screen significantly improving the precision of the commands. However, the bottom of the problem related to the size of the icons remains.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2> <Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Another serious problem is the use of a touch screen. Indeed, the icons and the drop-down menus being generally fixed, the user always points, using his finger or a stylus, the same small areas of the touch screen. This therefore leads to local destruction, decalibration and premature wear of the touch screen. The present invention aims to remedy the drawbacks of the above systems and to provide a man / machine interface with a touch screen in which navigation is simplified.
The invention also aims to limit the premature decalibration of touch screens.
The above objectives are achieved with a new method of navigation in a computer program by means of a touch screen. To do this, by touch control on a control area of the touch screen, a series of icons linked to predefined programs is scrolled so as to highlight at least one given icon.
Preferably, the control area is extended so as to distribute the touch contacts and avoid premature wear of the touch screen over defined areas. Provision may be made for the entire surface of the touch screen not covering an icon to constitute the control area. Thus, the order is no longer localized in a limiting manner.
Unlike the prior art, the scrolling of the icons allows a representation of these icons in large size, therefore easily distinguishable.
With such a method according to the invention, the fact of having an extended control area avoids that only certain small areas of the screen are constantly called upon.
Le point According to an advantageous characteristic of the invention, the touch control for scrolling through the series of icons comprises a touch contact followed by a directional movement. The speed and direction of travel are defined by the point of contact and the projection onto the travel direction of a vector obtained as a result of the directional movement. Point
<Desc/Clms Page number 3><Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The icons can be represented independently of each other, attached or embedded in a scrolling banner and representing for example a landscape.
Advantageously, the control zone can be distinct from the icons. However, according to a variant of the invention, the command zone includes the icons and an application linked to an icon is launched by making a brief contact on this icon. This variant makes it possible to obtain an extended control area over the entire surface of the touch screen.
You can scroll through these icons to highlight
1 foreground in the center of the screen the icon representing the application you want to launch.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the icons scroll in a virtual circle inscribed in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the screen. Scrolling then allows each icon to be successively brought to the foreground of the screen, the other icons remaining in the background. In this case, it can be envisaged that only the icon appearing in the foreground on the touch screen is capable of launching an application.
We can also consider that all of the icons remain visible on the touch screen permanently during scrolling. Therefore, all icons can be active. According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the scrolling of the series of icons can have an inertia which is a function of the scrolling speed. Consequently, when a user takes off his finger or his stylus from the touch screen, the scrolling continues for a few very brief moments as a function of the movement made by this user to obtain the scrolling.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a communication tool provided with a touch screen and a processing unit for implementing a method according to the invention. Advantageously, this tool can be a personal digital assistant.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4> <Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Other advantages and characteristics of the invention will appear on examining the detailed description of a mode of implementation which is in no way limitative, and the appended drawings, in which: - Figure 1 is a view of a digital assistant personnel according to the invention, FIG. 2 is a flowchart illustrating certain steps of the method according to the invention; - Figure 3 is a schematic view of a touch screen according to the invention in which all the icons remain visible; and - Figure 4 is a schematic view of a touch screen according to the invention in which the icons are contiguous and form a landscape.
Although the invention is not limited thereto, the application of the method according to the invention to a personal digital assistant will now be described.
In FIG. 1 is represented such a personal digital assistant 1 accompanied by a control stylus 2.
Annex parts 4 are arranged laterally. This device comprises a touch screen 3 capable of displaying a man / machine interface according to the invention. This interface can come from an operating system created under Linux.
Rather than presenting fixed icons of small sizes, drop-down menus which are difficult to handle or even scroll bars, the interface according to the invention comprises a series of icons 5 capable of scrolling in response to an action of the control stylus. 2 on the entire control area 6. In the present case, this control area 6 comprises the surface located above, below and between the icons 5.
Si le stylet pointe sur The scrolling is implemented according to a process illustrated in the diagram of FIG. 2. When a user comes into contact with the touch screen 3 by means of the control stylus 2, he performs a pointing of the stylus in step 7 as shown in Figure 2. If the stylus points to
<Desc/Clms Page number 5><Desc / Clms Page number 5>
une icône à l'étape 8, alors le système d'exploitation lance à l'étape 9, une application liée à l'icône pointée. an icon in step 8, then the operating system launches in step 9, an application linked to the pointed icon.
On the other hand, if the stylus points, in step 10, to a control area 6, the operating system detects in step 11 the movement that the stylus makes on the touch screen 3, then calculates with the step 12 the projection of the vector obtained following the displacement. This vector makes it possible to determine the speed and the direction of movement of the icons as well as possibly an associated inertia. In step 13, the operating system then scrolls through the icons according to the determined vector.
While in Figure 1 the series of icons moves along a horizontal banner, in Figure 3 is shown a series of icons arranged in a circle and all visible on the screen. When the stylus 2 points to the touch screen with a lateral movement to the left, the series of icons scrolls so that each icon in the series successively comes to the foreground in the center of the screen. The icon in the foreground then has a size large enough to be easily identified and selected. Depending on the implementation of the invention, the other icons can also be active, that is to say be capable of launching an application, or else inactive, that is to say simply visible.
Par contre, une commande de défilement est caractérisée par un pointage long A third mode of implementation of the series of icons is illustrated in FIG. 4. We see there a continuous banner 14 representing a given landscape. This banner can be a series of icons placed side by side or else a series of separate icons embedded in specific places on the banner. Under these conditions, the command zone 6 can be confused with the entire surface of the touch screen 3. However, it is necessary to distinguish between a scroll command and an application launch command in the case where the stylus points to an icon. An application launch command is characterized by a brief touch of the stylus on an icon. On the other hand, a scroll command is characterized by a long pointing
<Desc/Clms Page number 6><Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Dans cet exemple particulier, les icônes peuvent êtres représentées par les zones actives 15 et 16. comprising a contact followed by a lateral displacement whatever the contact zone over the entire surface of the touch screen. In this particular example, the icons can be represented by the active zones 15 and 16.
Of course, the invention is not limited to the examples which have just been described and numerous modifications can be made to these examples without departing from the scope of the invention.
