Abstract

The bumper consists of a main fender (1) of a thermoplastic material which has a lengthwise aperture (5) for a main reinforcing beam (6) joined to the edges of the aperture. The beam has inner ribs (9) which are denser in zones corresponding to the vehicle's lengthwise chassis members, and on the opposite side to the fender it has shock absorbers in those zones. The shock absorbers are in the form of cylindrical or prismatic chambers, e.g. of circular or rectangular cross-section, containing honeycomb structures or blocks of a compressible material. The beam also has an over-moulded reinforcing layer of a plastic material containing woven or non-woven fibres, and the fender and beam are made from simultaneously injected different but compatible thermoplastic materials, e.g. polypropylene for the fender and two layers of polypropylene and glass fibre reinforced polypropylene for the beam.
