Abstract

The incineration or processing is initiated and maintained by application of radio-frequency or microwave heating to the material. The radio-frequency heating is operated in the range 1 MHz to 300 MHz, or if microwaves are used a suitable frequency range is between 300 MHz and 1 GHz. The material in placed in a reactor vessel (1) with two electrodes (2) to either side of the vessel. The electrodes are connected to the source (3) of RF or microwave energy. A fume extractor (4) is connected to the top of the reactor vessel. A fan (7) aids fume extraction. The electrodes are hollow and can be cooled.

Description

The subject of the present invention is a method of incinerating combustible waste and its associated device. Said device, as will emerge from its description, is suitable for the incineration of solid and liquid waste having a low calorific value and in particular the sands used foundries for reuse or mineral and organic composites such as automobile brake linings to landfill. It uses an electro-magnetic field to initiate and maintain combustion or pyrolysis.

According to the prior art, the incineration of waste with low calorific value requires an addition of heat to initiate and maintain combustion or pyrolysis.

This supply of heat is usually carried out by radiation as obtained with electrical resistances and / or by convection with hot gases produced by the combustion of fuel for example, or even by thermal conduction with the walls of an oven. techniques require creating an intimate contact between the waste and the hot gases or the walls of the furnace and therefore dividing the waste and brewing it continuously.

Under these conditions, two major handicaps appear: - For waste containing a high proportion of inert matter, the heating necessary for combustion or pyrolysis concerns all of the waste, which causes significant energy loss.

The waste is in an oven that must itself be heated, which again causes energy losses.

For example, for used foundry sands, electric resistance furnaces and fluidized bed ovens are currently being developed. The sand must first be ground because it is agglomerated with resins, in order to be able to be maintained in a fluidized bed. On the other hand, the oven in which the resins which cover the sand are burnt, must be kept hot, which, taking into account its insulation, requires a long and costly operation.

The present invention makes it possible to avoid these problems by carrying out the core and preferential heating of the combustible part of the waste by application of an electromagnetic field.

The use of electromagnetic energy such as high frequencies (between 1 MHz and 300 MHz) and advantageously in the range 13.56 MHz or 27MHz, or microwaves (between 300 MHz and 30 GHz) and advantageously in the 2450 MHz or 915 MHz range is particularly interesting for the regeneration of foundry sands because this waste consists mainly of quartz which is transparent to the electric field (ie it does not heat or very little under the action of the electromagnetic field).

On the other hand, the resin residues have high losses under the action of the electromagnetic field, which leads to their rapid heating. It is then enough to ensure a circulation of oxidant (air or oxygen), to thus achieve combustion or pyrolysis of the resin.

The sand is thus regenerated quickly and at a lower cost because it is not necessary to bring the system into temperature regime since the heat is transmitted directly into the resin and the heat losses are reduced to a minimum.

A device for treating foundry sand by high frequencies simply consists of a reactor (l), consisting of two electrodes (2) connected to a generator (3), and a smoke treatment system (4). The reactor itself consists mainly of two hollow electrodes (2), which can thus be cooled, between which the electromagnetic field is applied. The sand is introduced in bulk and without prior grinding, between the two electrodes.

The injection of oxidant is carried out at the base of the reactor (5), under the sand. The extractor (7) makes it possible to suck up the fumes produced by the combustion of the resins. The washer (4) makes it possible to purify the said fumes in case they contain pollutants such as sulfur-based products.

Two types of installations can exist: - Either discontinuously, in which case the reactor is loaded and then unloaded after each treatment cycle; -Either continuously, in which case a sand drive device, such as a silico-aluminous refractory screw with low dielectric losses, is placed between the two electrodes.
