Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a catalytic process for the production of unsaturated alcohols by the selective hydrogenation of fatty esters, in particular fatty esters obtained from agricultural resources.
Derivatives, a review by E.S. LOWER, Spec.Chem., 1982,2(1), p. 30-38.)
The production of unsaturated alcohols, and in particular fatty alcohols, is of considerable interest. These products are in particular formulation agents for cosmetic products, polyurethane components used in the leather industry, industrial coatings and the building industry. They are also synthetic intermediates of many industrial products. (See for example "Oleyl Alcohol and its
Derivatives, a review by ES LOWER, Spec. Chem., 1982,2 (1), p. 30-38.)
The hydrogenation of esters to alcohols is a difficult reaction which requires severe conditions of temperature and pressure, and conventional catalysts, whether catalysts based on mixed oxides of copper and chromium, doped or not, which operate between 250 and 350 "C, or supported transition metal catalysts, which operate at lower temperature (200-250" C), require, to achieve an acceptable minimum pressure conversion of at least 10 MPa (100 bars), and most often greater than 20 MPa.
It is known in the prior art to prepare unsaturated alcohols with a catalytic system formed by an association of rhodium with, for example tin, deposited on a support, for example silica or alumina (US Pat. No. 4,456,775,
EP 095408). Nevertheless, the high cost and the limited availability of rhodium are important drawbacks which must be taken into account and which have led to further research with the aim of finding a catalyst providing good alcohol yields, making it possible to work under relatively mild conditions. and not having the drawbacks associated with the use of rhodium.
In another patent (EP 0172091), nickel has been substituted for rhodium and the resulting catalytic system seems to have the same catalytic properties and leads to alcohol yields similar to those presented in the aforementioned patents. However, all of these processes lead to the formation of a significant amount of saturated alcohols which are not compounds exhibiting the desired properties.
JP 04/159240, Mitsubishi Kasei Corp., EP 539274, Rhône-Poulenc). Previously, CJ Narasimhan et al. (J. Catal., 121, 1990, p. 165-182) have developed a catalyst based on ruthenium and tin deposited on alumina, reduced by sodium borohydride, very selective for unsaturated alcohol (80% at total conversion ). This work has inspired many patents (JP 04/159239 and
JP 04/159240, Mitsubishi Kasei Corp., EP 539274, Rhône-Poulenc). In another patent (JP 04/82851), Mizukami et al. claim a process for obtaining unsaturated alcohols from fatty acids (oleic acid) and in the presence of a catalyst based on rhenium or ruthenium and tin. They obtain an alcohol selectivity which at the maximum s It turns out to be only 60-90% at full conversion, while the cost-effectiveness of the process is heavily hampered by the cost of noble metal catalysts, which otherwise are found not to be devoid of toxicity.
The object of the invention lies in a process for the preparation of unsaturated alcohols by catalytic hydrogenation of fatty acids or esters according to the main reaction
where R1 is an unsaturated aliphatic radical of 10 to 22 carbon atoms, where R2 an alkyl radical of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, saturated or unsaturated, and preferably an alkyl radical of C1 to C10, more particularly a methyl or ethyl radical or propyl, in the presence of an original bimetallic catalytic system comprising at least cobalt and tin, lead or germanium as active elements, operating at temperatures of 200 to 300 "C, and under pressures of 1 to 10 MPa Preferred catalyst compositions contain cobalt and tin.
Among the esters of unsaturated carboxylic acids constituting preferred starting materials for the process according to the invention, mention may be made of the methyl, ethyl or propyl esters of lauroleic, myristoleic, palmitoleic, oleic, adoleic and ketoleic acids, and in general products resulting from an alcoholysis by light alcohols of triglycerides extracted from oil plants.
The operation is carried out in a continuous or discontinuous reactor under a total pressure of between 10 and 100 bars (1 and 10 MPa) and preferably between 30 and 80 bars (3 and 8 MPa) with stirring, at a temperature of between 100 C and 500 "C and preferably between 200" C and 300 "C, and with a hydrogen ester molar ratio of, for example between 2: 1 and 50: 1 and more preferably between 2: 1 and 5: 1, in the presence of a catalyst Supported bimetallic containing the following elements: cobalt, the weight percentage of which is chosen between 0.1 and 20% and preferably between 1 and 10%, and at least one element chosen from the group consisting of germanium,
Tin and lead, and the weight percentage of which is between 0.1 and 30% and more particularly between 1.5% and 12%. It is possible to use an acidic or basic support which can be chosen from silicas, aluminas, silico-aluminates, activated charcoals or else oxides of metals from groups IIB and IVB.
It is particularly advantageous to use catalysts in which the atomic ratio of the element (s) of the Sn, Ge, Pb group present in the cobalt catalyst is from 0.01: 1 to 10: 1 and preferably 1: 1 to 5 : 1.
The process carried out under these conditions makes it possible to achieve conversion rates (percentage by weight of conversion of the initial reagent) of 80%, and selectivities for unsaturated alcohol (percentage by weight of unsaturated alcohol in the conversion products) of 60%.
The catalyst is prepared by impregnating a support with the active metal species, then activated by reduction with hydrogen.
As regards the various techniques for impregnating the support, it is possible, for example, to bring the support into contact with an aqueous or organic solution of the cobalt compound and of a compound of the selected additional metal or metals. The cobalt and the additional metal can be introduced simultaneously or successively. After having left the support in contact with the solution for several hours, the catalyst can be reduced in situ with a solution of sodium borohydride at room temperature. (Narasimhan method, the description of which will be found below, adapted to the Co / Sn catalyst with regard to Examples 1 and 2). After washing with distilled water, the catalyst is dried in an oven and under nitrogen at 1200C for a few hours.
Another impregnation technique consists in bringing the support into contact with aqueous solutions of metal salts of appropriate concentrations. The water is evaporated by drying in a sand bath at temperatures between 50 and 150 "C, preferably between 80 and 100 C with stirring.
Co/Sn, à propos des exemples 3 et 4.Finally, a preparative technique of the sol-gel type can be used which consists in bringing the metal precursor salts (CoCl2 and SnC12) into contact with an alcohol (ethanol). The description is given below, adapted to the catalyst.
Co / Sn, regarding examples 3 and 4.
The cobalt salts used in either method can be chloride, nitrate or acetate. It is the chlorides which are used in the examples.
The support can be of varied nature, as already mentioned above. A particularly suitable support has specific characteristics such as a specific surface, determined by the BET method, of between 10 and 500 m2 / gram.
A more original method of preparing the catalyst, widely developed by
Mizukami et al. (JAOCS, Vol. 69, N 5, 1992, 410416), makes it possible to prepare in situ the support, in particular alumina, by polymerization of an organometallic compound with a diol. The presence of metal salts during the formation of the support results in a solid in which the metals are homogeneously dispersed. After washing, the catalyst is dried in air and under nitrogen.
Once the catalyst is prepared, it undergoes an activation treatment under hydrogen at high temperature, for example 300-500 "C, in order to obtain an active metallic phase. The procedure for this treatment under hydrogen consists, for example, of a slow rise. from the temperature under a stream of hydrogen up to the maximum reduction temperature, between 300 and 500 "C, and preferably between 350 and 450" C, followed by holding for 1 to 12 hours at this temperature.
Les exemples suivants, non limitatifs, illustrent l'invention par rapport à l'art antérieur. The following non-limiting examples illustrate the invention with respect to the prior art.
Preparatory Techniques
Examples 1 and 2:
The catalyst is prepared according to the technique described by Narasimhan. Salts,
CoCl2 and SnCl2 are brought into contact with the support at room temperature for 12 hours. The metals thus deposited are then reduced with an aqueous solution of freshly prepared sodium borohydride. The quantity of NaBH4 involved during the reduction step depends on the overall content of metals deposited (metal / reducing agent molar ratio = 7.10-2). After reduction, the mixture is kept under stirring for 12 hours. After filtration, washing with water and then with ethanol, the catalyst is dried for 8 hours in an oven and 4 hours under nitrogen at 1200C. The catalyst is then reduced with hydrogen at 300 ° C for 12 hours.
EXAMPLES 3 AND 4:
The Co-Sn catalysts are prepared by a sol-gel type technique. The metal salts (CoCl2 and SnC12) are dissolved beforehand in methanol and in hexylene glycol (2-methyl pentanediol-2,4). The mixture is then heated to 90 ° C.
The aluminum isopropoxide is then added and the mixture is again refluxed (90 ° C.) for 3 hours. The polymerization is then initiated by adding water. After maintaining constant stirring ( 3 hours), the gel obtained is placed under vacuum at 1200 ° C. for 2 hours. It is finally dried under nitrogen at 175 ° C. (5 hours). The carbon precursors are however completely removed by reduction of the solid with hydrogen at 300 ° C. (12 hours).

It can be seen that the method of preparation has a determining effect on the catalytic properties. The catalyst reduced by sodium borohydride turns out to be the most active and the most selective under the reaction conditions chosen. However, it can be noted that the Co-Sn system prepared by a sol-gel method and therefore free of boron, leads to a very satisfactory selectivity, taking into account the ease of its preparation.
Exemple 4: Catalyseur sol-gel
Example 4: Sol-gel catalyst
In this test, the evolution of the conversion and of the selectivity as a function of the reaction time is determined.
This test was carried out in the presence of a catalyst prepared by a sol-gel method and containing 1.9% (by weight) of cobalt and 3.9% (by weight) of tin.

<SEP> Selectivities

These results show that the Co-Sn catalyst prepared by a sol-gel technique leads to a selectivity for oleic alcohol of 62% when the conversion of methyl oleate is 80%. This selectivity is of the same order of magnitude or much greater than those obtained in the presence of catalysts prepared by different methods.
