Abstract
A fuel compsn. for I.C. engines contg. a mixt. of 5-8C etherifiable and potentially etherifiable olefinic hydrocarbons is characterised in that the prepn. comprises: (a) catalytic etheriFIcation of the hydrocarbon mixt. in the presence of a 1-4C alcohol, so that the molar ratio alcohol : etherifiable olefins is at least 1:1, accompanied by washing the effluent to eliminate excess alcohol (before and/or after stage b); (b) separation of the ethers formed at (a) to recover the ethers and potentially etherifiable olefins; (c) transformation of the olefins from (b), effected in the absence of the alcohol, and (d) finishing etherification stage, to give a mixt. rich in ethers.
